Just wondering what makes you wanna produce, why you do it, what makes you spend a shit load off money on software, hardware ect and spend hours sitting by ya set up making beats?
Edited: Going on what scarabza said how old are you(if ya dont mind saying), how long you been producing and did you produce before dubstep or did you start producing because off dubstep
EDITED: Just thought did you teach yaself or have you done like a uni/college corse

Because it's more addictive that a Heroin & Crack sandwich.
serious answer... i started listening to music a year or two ago, and thinking, 'i wish i had the ability to make that sound/music'

Been doing it for years now, just need to be doing something creative basically.
If it wasn't music production I'd probably be doing something else similar.

Keeps me out of trouble too. I also like learning new things and working shit out, its good for the brain.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Listening to minimal techno and thinking "I can do that" got me started...

Now I found out theres a hell of a lot more to it than I thought before. But basically, for me its still the fun that drives me.

Nobody else was making the stuff I was hearing in my head. Also it's a lot easier to get bookings if you are a badman producer.
One day

I like learning, I really like music...a lot.
I'd hear a tune I liked and be like - HOW?!? - to certain noises... one thing led to another, and ended up trying to recreate certain noises, which in turn led to making tunes.
All helped along by the fact that most of my mates are guys who produce too.... and didn't want to be the girl who couldn't do that too!! Haha!

Music choose me, i didnt choose music but nor can i leave it. (believe me I have tried.)
Its a life, not a job/hobby.....

A long time ago someone put a gun in my face and I thought, "fuck being a gangsta". I then got pretty serious with the music. So I guess what I mean is I produce b/c it's a lot of fun and safer than so many other fun things.
If that's what you're into...

I do it to get pussy. Actually that's not true, and if that's your reason then you are a slag.
Music is the closest thing we have to an abstract language as humans. It gives us a sense of spiritual communion and I think we need this in order to not feel so alone in the world. It helps us express the otherwise totally unexpressable things we experience on a daily basis, as well as giving us a bit extra meaning in our lives.
So, I'll go with "because I am moved to."

i was making sort of extreme music with me hardcore (math-rock) band but i could do things with electronica that a band could never do, and at the same time, went off on a breakcore quest with software...as a 5 peice band we tried to achieve some mathematically cool things, but was like a step back in comparison to what could be done with DSP...the band has since split but i'm still making tunes on me own
electronica just changed the approach to music...but the idea's and appetite for it are still the same.
sometimes i reckon i'd be happy working in a lab experimenting on new supertechnology for electronica and DSP than making music (like a job at NI...but i ain't at that level of know how)

i started to think about producing about 2007 when i got into dubstep, because i clicked with it, i used to just be happy playing guitar and then i realised there was a whole world of things i could be doing as well, and i wanted to give dubstep my two cents, always thought that if you like something enough try and give something back

in addition to why do you produce, it will be interesting to hear what kind of age groups everyone is... and if they produce for a living.
me - 34 years old (sigh), linux sysadmin, used to DJ hard house (before it became cheesy) and now getting into production for the first time. never late than never right?

my cousin was a DJ in the early 80's
my brother & his best friend started a "rap" group and wouldn't let me rhyme with them, so I told them I was going to be a DJ and they can sod off
so, I started making mix tapes using a casette recorder using the pause button
fast forward 25 years and here I am!
the reason I keep at at is:
1. I love to make music that makes people dance or feel emotion
2. chicks dig it
