cheap places to live

Post by pk- » Sun Aug 20, 2006 9:55 pm

i'm going spare since i moved back into my parents' gaff, so i was wondering if anyone could recommend a nice & cheap area of london i can move to? i need to get to Blackwall for work, so somewhere east/south east-ish with decent transport connections is what i'm looking for. anyone know what shadwell's like, seems well cheap from what i've read on various estate agents' sites..

cheers in advance!

by 'nice' i mean i don't particularly want to get raped up the arse or stabbed on my way home at night

yeah i was looking at camberwell and it sounds really good, but i've heard that it's a nightmare to get anywhere from unless you drive or ride a bike?

since i don't have a driving license and i'm a fat bastard, this may be problematic.

When you guys say £45/£50 a week what would that be for?

A room in a shared property? Bedsit?

That was a room in a shared place for me, looking at more like £475 a month for a 'studio' in East Dulwich which is quite a nice area.

(BTW dont want to piss off anyone who lives there but think calling Camberwell nice is streaching it a bit!)
That depends on where you go. There are some really nice parts of. Admittidly camberwell green is rough but so what..

Lived in Hackney for years and i've never had a problem. It's not that bad. The reputation is not diserved. I feel far more threatend in places like camden/archway/kentishtown. And you are gonna get something good for ya pound. There's loads to do in terms of going out/pubs. The turkish food in Dalston/stokenewington is some of the best you will get anywhere in the world. There is a proper comunity vibe you don't get in a lot of places in london. And perhaps most importantly there is a lot of all night offies lol. Drink till ya drop.
I used to live in south,Brixton, camberwell, peckham, tulse hill. Dalston is not as in ya face as Brixton. And it is only a 20 minute bus ride away from the city. Or a ten minute ride on the over land to liverpool street.
As you can tell i like it in Hackney. Ill give nothing but props.
Ps, very close to FWD

Dalston at night is like NYC or something, you can get a Turkish feast any time of the night for about 2 quid

The only people i know who are managing to live for 50 a week are living in commercial properties and its all a bit sketchy

and Camberwell IS nice! I can't understand where the reputation comes from. I spend a lot of my time there and i'm moving there and never been faced with any problems what so ever

hmm yeah gentrification strikes again fo sho! Honestly tho Walworth Road and Camberwell Green aren't the nicest bits, but they still have kind of a charm to them, for me at least. Feel safe and you will be safe is my attitude

oi dalston sounds sick

http://www.24-7estates.com/pchomes/Prop ... RE1_000303

that's exactly what i'm looking for

the reason that i was asking how nice/safe dalston is was simply because somewhere that big, in an area that's relatively central with fairly good (from the sounds of things) links to the rest of the city for that price must have a catch. and the only catch i could think of was that if i asked someone in the street where the local post office was i'd get a screwdriver in the neck or something

sounds alright though (y)

na man its kind of got an air of sketchiness about it and its (literally) a bit grimey but i recon you can definetly walk down the road unassumingly without getting the gas face or the shank ribs
