-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back from a summer break, October sees the first Doublespeak event in the Hold since Warps Jimmy Edgar graced the stage earlier this year. And it looks set to be another belter, with a very special live set from Vex’d.
Vex’d are East London-based Dubstep dons Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter. Their dark, edgy sound, and storming live shows have made them the talk of some of this summers best festivals, and Saturday October 7th sees their Glasgow debut at Doublespeak.

Influenced by grime and dubstep as well as many other elements of the underground electronic scene, their sound has beckoned comparisons with early Aphex Twin classics. However Vex’d have created a sound that’s all their own: digital graffiti music, whatever form it might take. With distorted, repetitive waves of heavy bass, rhythms constructed with Swiss precision, and just the right weight on the kick and snare for maximum club impact. This is the sort stuff that could rip weak speaker cones to shreds, luckily on this occasion the Doublespeak boys are bringing in the infamous Mungo’s Hi Fi Sound System, which should help do justice to the awesome sound that Vex’d create. This is not to be missed!

Performing alongside Vex’d are two unsung heroes of Glasgow clubbing. Konx-Om-Pax has been at the forefront of the city’s electronic music scene with his much revered Eskrima events, showcasing the cream of the digital music world. In his spare time he enjoys giving clubbers a turbo-fun alternative to the sterile worlds of house and r’n’b’ through his frantic DJ sets at The Art School, as well directing videos for electro-jazz crooner Jamie Lidell. Alongside him will be Doublespeak resident Hudson Mohawke. Hudson is well known for his sell out hip hop productions as part of Surface Emp and block party DJ sets, but more recently his sets have expanded to include a wider range of music, spanning many genres. Combining his blistering turntable skills (he was a DMC finalist at just fifteen) with extreme music makes him the perfect Doublespeak resident. Off the back of reaching #2 in the Japanese hip hop charts under his Heralds of Change moniker as well as touring Europe, this residency is a further stone to step on the road to success for one of the most talented young electronic and urban artists in the country.

Hmm... Very mixed feelings after this. The DJs before Vex'D weren't my cup of tea at all (selection & mixing skills). They emptied the floor all the time by dropping silly grime tunes. Vex'D just playing for an hour was okay. Mixing skill under average to be honest. Soundsystem was amazing and the crowd went mental by some good tunes (if they were some good ones).

But for 5£ i can't complain. Still, Brunswick with local DJs was always WAY better.

I thought it was pretty good!

Admitedly i was pretty piddled.

Vexd were sweet.

Yeah, warm up djs were a bit random, but some of the tunes they played were pretty good. In the end, those guys aren't running a dubstep night so we can't expect them to be playing that much of it!

Shame about the 1 o'clockishness...

Lost you at the end Carlo, hope you had a good un.

Warm up djs were a bit waste but it was a good set from Vex'd and the sound system was quality as usual.

Apologies for the mixing, it sucked ass. But what with all the jumping around, the needles were skipping on literally every mix, and the moniters were so distorted it was impossible to hear what was happening in the booth. I should put a studio mix up sometime for proof of basic beat matching ability.

I dont know what kind of shit you lot are into, but we thought the warm up deejays were sick. So good to go out and hear J dilla, madlib, ck kidtronix, hyphy and grime alongside dubstep. Wish that was more often the case.

Thanks for coming. Wicked crowd. It's Vex'd not Vex'D btw. That would be gay.

I left around 1.15am.

@ Jamie/Vex'd

Well, everyones got different taste. I didn't know it wasn't a proper dubstep night so i expected some warm-up with dubstep and not grime. I like grime to listen to but not in a club. It wasn't a bad night but not an extraordinary night either. As for the mixing, you don't need to defend yourself as i wasn't attacking anyone just mentioning it.

What was the track around 12.30am? I really like that one. Can't really remember how it was, just like fast basshits like in Lion?

stnuc that go to a night to hear just dubstep are actually fucking stnuc. total no brainer. me and ross had a fucking belter of a time playin bass heavy tunes on a killer pa. mega props to jamie and co, proper sound guys that know shit about tunes. pleasure to dj with. lovley chaps.

dubstep is seriously a genre that needs to be fucked right up the arse cos it so fucking insuler and cliquey. stnuc take it too serious and forget about the raving/fun side of things, how gives a fuck if my mixing was a bit off!

LIGHTEN THE FUCK UP YOU BUNCH OFF TIGHT ARSE GEEKY FUCKERS!!!

haha. major respect to vex'd. they know how to have fun.
