Back from a summer break, October sees the first Doublespeak event in the Hold since Warps Jimmy Edgar graced the stage earlier this year. And it looks set to be another belter, with a very special live set from Vex’d.
Vex’d are East London-based Dubstep dons Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter. Their dark, edgy sound, and storming live shows have made them the talk of some of this summers best festivals, and Saturday October 7th sees their Glasgow debut at Doublespeak.
Influenced by grime and dubstep as well as many other elements of the underground electronic scene, their sound has beckoned comparisons with early Aphex Twin classics. However Vex’d have created a sound that’s all their own: digital graffiti music, whatever form it might take. With distorted, repetitive waves of heavy bass, rhythms constructed with Swiss precision, and just the right weight on the kick and snare for maximum club impact. This is the sort stuff that could rip weak speaker cones to shreds, luckily on this occasion the Doublespeak boys are bringing in the infamous Mungo’s Hi Fi Sound System, which should help do justice to the awesome sound that Vex’d create. This is not to be missed!
Performing alongside Vex’d are two unsung heroes of Glasgow clubbing. Konx-Om-Pax has been at the forefront of the city’s electronic music scene with his much revered Eskrima events, showcasing the cream of the digital music world. In his spare time he enjoys giving clubbers a turbo-fun alternative to the sterile worlds of house and r’n’b’ through his frantic DJ sets at The Art School, as well directing videos for electro-jazz crooner Jamie Lidell. Alongside him will be Doublespeak resident Hudson Mohawke. Hudson is well known for his sell out hip hop productions as part of Surface Emp and block party DJ sets, but more recently his sets have expanded to include a wider range of music, spanning many genres. Combining his blistering turntable skills (he was a DMC finalist at just fifteen) with extreme music makes him the perfect Doublespeak resident. Off the back of reaching #2 in the Japanese hip hop charts under his Heralds of Change moniker as well as touring Europe, this residency is a further stone to step on the road to success for one of the most talented young electronic and urban artists in the country.
