What The Hell Is This "Funky" People Speak Of???

Post by godflesh fiend » Sun Dec 28, 2008 10:24 am

Forgive me for being so naive but what the hell is "Funky"? I mean I know funky music when I hear it but I assume this is a type of music which is carrying that term as it's genre name now.

right !! my view on funky is...

UKG turned into a cheese fest, and media+so solid pretty much killed off the soulful and sexy sound which is what it was all about.

So then spurned breaks / dubstep etc. which was one off shoot of other genres and ukg in general. Then you also had grime which was an off
shoot of the mc-ing side of UKG and I presonally think is uk's answer to
US hiphop.

So now you got funky - which is kinda garage-esque but house-esque too.
Its got a urban dirty uk edge to it whilst retaining some soul and actual
music to its productions. Garage vocals, cuts, dubby basslines, its there
for the ladies to brock out to as well. Then its got the house bongo and
usually 4x4 kick to it. Gotta remember with Funky there is no particular
forumla to it at the moment which is why its still innovative - you can do
anything and experiment with it.

Reckon is all about the garage style vocal, house / soca influence beats myself.

Look for donaeo, crazy couzins, footloose, dj naughty, dj zinc etc...

Some big tunes are Bongo Jam, i'd also say Zinc's tune with No Lay could
be classed as a dub in Funky but i'm not sure....

whatever, the vibe is all good - no trouble, no darkness just uplifting good vibes. Suitable for a different mood, as it breaks, jazz, dubstep, uk, house
for other moods.

Representing the london underground at the moment anyway! Poss the next thing to replace bassline (in a way hopeso as that shit is crap, and
funky is actually credible at the moment... but dont want the scene to get
watered and ruined)

the trick to liking most house type beats (including ukg, funky, and etc) is to learn how to dance. if youre not dancing the beats are usually sound repetitious and annoying.

i like funky and bassline. theres good and bad in any style.

Looking up the word 'fun' in a dictionary and thinking about how it could apply more to your life also helps...

I'm not the biggest fan of this funky stuff but it's quite harmless, and Geeneus is a badman and can do what he wants
