what do you mean by that? i dont know much about the "science" of sound, but what is the concept of this thing, beyond the fact that it is massive how does everything work?

A subwoofer is a loudspeaker dedicated to the reproduction of bass audio frequencies, from perhaps 150 Hz down as far as 20 Hz. So if the speaker is designed to cut-off once past 40 Hz, you will not feel as much bass pressure because it is below 30 Hz that really gives u that bassface effect.

Another interesting effect is that the human ear cannot gather directional information from pure sub frequencies, unlike in the higher frequencies.

That was intense.

Pointless but intense.

The amps he was running there were phenomenal.

well a crossover determines what audio frequencies are "allowed" to be played through certain speakers. so as i said "crossed over at 40hz" im saying that the speaker is only going to be playing sub notes that are 40hz and below. and crossing over a sub at 40hz is pretty low. 80hz is usually the lowest people cross-over at for sub (at least more in PA/live sound).

and that design of sub is a horn enclosure (i guess its still an enclosure, even if its made of bricks). horns are known to be more efficient than standard speakers (you know, with a speaker just mounted in a box). so that set up is without a doubt putting out some massive bottom end.
