I read somewhere Sony weren't to hot for replacement parts and aftersales service for their machines though, despite looking quite sexy.
Just what I've read, I've never owned one yet...

I've repaired a lot of laptops in my time and 2 companies make it practically impossible to get parts without letting them completely repair your unit themselves (and charge you a fortune for the privilege), those companies are Apple and Sony.
Do be honest though in terms of frequency of breakdowns, Sony are pretty low on the list (I wont mention the highest!).

Wont go naming too many names but the ones I would try to avoid
In the cheaper range - sounds like Jujitsu.
In the not so cheap range - Howard Phillips Lovecraft was known as .....

Every laptop I have ever owned I have hated. Wish I could get a good recommendation! I have a 17" widescreen on my lappy, I still wouldn't want to use it for production. I still like my tower for that.

get an HP. I did heavy computing on one (including audio) for 3 and a half years and it didn't let me down once. It was built like a fucking tank as well.

My last joint was a compaq. It wasn't great. Wasn't horrible either I guess. I have a Toshiba now and it is garbage imo. Thinking about getting something cheaper and smaller basically just for djing and messing around on the web. I can't deal with the bloatware most companies stack up on their machines tho.

Go with Dell, Acer, or Toshiba and perform a format and fresh install of your OS to remove all unnecessary OEM 'bloatware': Sorted!

Yeah I tried that with my Toshiba. First I tried putting XP on and that didn't work out too well since they don't support it driver wise for my computer. Tried doing it again with Vista and still couldn't get everything to work right. Finally I used their restore disk that it came with. Such a shitty way too it. The Toshiba drivers suck ass. I often times fail at computers tho to be fair.

ibm thinkpads are heavy duty
i've played 30+ live sets wi the one i've got now
ibm thinkpad t61 core2duo 2ghz 2 meg ram
never died on me
i only got one cos i had to borrow one off a promoter when my shite old laptop died on me before a gig and it played my ableton set ridiculously much smoother than my old laptop
best money i ever spent getting the ibm
it's even survived some div spilling a pint of beer over it
sturdy as fuck
