Something cool for Ableton users (Win only)

Post by zion cluster » Fri Mar 13, 2009 6:55 pm

Here is something I have been working on for a little while and wanted to share with everyone.

Its a multi-point envelope for automating/controlling midi parameters in Live.

Image

To use this you will need MIDI yoke:

http://www.midiox.com/zip/MidiYokeSetup.msi

and the plugin:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/538583/Zionc ... velope.rar

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Install:

Install MIDI yoke wherever you like. Drop the plug in your vst directory.

Now open live and go to the MIDI sync page.
Set all MIDI yoke ports to: Track OFF, Sync OFF, Remote ON.

To set-up the envelope:

Drag the envelope plug to a blank midi track. Set an unused Channel and CC#. Set the midi out to any midi yoke port.

To assign the envelope:

Long way: Make a new midi clip on the envelope track, insert any note at the start of the clip.

Enter midi assign mode and click on the parameter you want to assign the envelope to.

Press space to start play and trigger the note in the envelope track.
Press space again to stop.
The envelope's CC# should now be assigned, so you can tweak the limits and leave edit mode.

Short way: Pick a CC# from your midi controller, assign this to a parameter, then set the envelope to the same CC#.

Now any time a midi note comes to the envelope track, it will trigger the envelope and change the assigned parameter.

Uses:

Set up an instrument rack, put in two or more samples/synths. add a filter VST. Assign the envelope to the filter freq. Set the midi in on the envelope track to the track with the sounds on it PRE-FX, set monitoring on the envelope track to IN. Now if you play notes on the sample/synth track the envelope will be triggered, changing the filter freq.

There is a demo set with the plug that works this way.

Right click on the envelope to add/remove breakpoints and other stuff.

Caveats:

This is a mono/legato envelope, playing more notes will not retrigger.

When recording anything the envelope automation will also record if there is midi on it, to prevent this turn the plug off while recording other parts.

Hope this is useful/fun.

Its basically a way that you can trigger an envelope when you play a note, instead of having to draw them in all the time. I use it most for racking up several synths/samples and having them all go through a filter VST like WOW. I also like routing the same envelope to several params in a rack at once.

I feel that it makes Live feel a bit more modular. I'm working on an LFO too, which may be of more interest to the Dubstep crowd :D
