Toms, hats and crashes

Post by drake6 » Sat Mar 21, 2009 8:57 pm

So I finally realized what is missing in my drum patterns. I'm not getting enough movement with mainly my toms and also my hats. Just wanted to know if anybody had any suggestions on how to arrange my toms and such with different tones as well as usage of open/closed hats, and crash cymbals. As always... Much appreciation. 8)

Wow. Thanks for the definition of percusion and putting me in my place. Boy is my face red right now. Glad to see your dictionary search skills are up to par. Here's something I found in the dictionary too.

reverse some closed hats and fire 'em off in quick sucession just before a hit? Just an idea... I'm new at this :)

Nice. I've actually been messing around a bit with the reversals on the hats. I like how it leaves you anticipating the hit.

's nice to get the a few of the same or very similar hi-hats/toms and tune/eq/adsr each one differently. Then, (if you have a controller) just loop the snare + kick while trying out different pattens with all the percussion (thanks to R we all know exactly what that means now) and no quantisation, then listen back and pick out interesting ideas to keep/expand on.
I find that works a little better than random grid clicking.
Another idea I find useful is to loop the kick + snare and get a microphone, then just kind of beatbox percussion along to it, then put that file in your sequencer and put samples in the place of your vocals. Makes it sound more human, but remember to delete the track of you beat boxing to save embarassment when you accidentally play it to your friends

If you are making heavirer tracks, you might use ride cymbals, they make everything so much more aggressive.

And some gorgeous minimal/groovy techno wouldn't be the same without a few toms rolling around the drum tracks, ie Dinky, Ellen Allien, Gaiser.

I like some tambourine samples, really tinny, just fatten them up a bit.

use shuffle on your hats and stuff, cause dubstep is fairly slow (well, sort of) if everything is hard quantized it sounds too mechanical (only good if you want that vibe i guess). also fuck about with velocity and stuff, or even better try using multisamples or bits of breaks to give a more natural feel - especiaklly with shit like toms.
