Jamie Vex’d

Vex’d upped the ante when they hit the scene back in 2004. Two massive releases on the Subtext label caught the attention of Mike Paradinas which led to a number of releases on the Planet Mu label including the seminal Degenerate album which marked a turning point in the dubstep sound. A series of radio shows including the legendry Dubstep Warz and the award winning Breezeblock set on Radio 1 followed as well as a djing schedule that took them all over the world, further 12’’s and a slew of radically diverse remixes. All this established the Vex’d boys as two of the most innovative artists of the time.

Now Jamie Vex'd is making his mark as a solo artist, combing the jilted sci-fi of Vex'd with his own more colourful and hip hop tinged solo work; equally future orientated, but with a new found warmth and exuberance. As well as djing his own tracks, he champions the work of new like minded innovators such as Starkey, Zomby, Joker and Rustie, before eventually devouring the dancefloor with classic Vex'd annihilation. With several awesome remixes and a new EP on Planet Mu, Jamie's solo project is exciting the imaginations of audiences around the world once again. Add that to his new future soul project Dakimh, and the continuing industrial devastation of Vex'd, and you know he’ll be one to watch in 2009 and beyond.

Scorn

Seen by many as the daddy of all things bassy Scorn is the one-man project of former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris. A synthesis of new technology and the traditional grindcore logarithms of pounding bottom end drums and bass Scorn is closely allied with post-industrial dub terrorists such as Bill Laswell, Techno Animal, James Plotkin, Robert Musso, and Anton Fier. Something of a study in extremes Harris began experimenting with monochrome ambient and dub styles toward the tail end of his association with Napalm Death. Releasing material through Earache as Scorn (his ambient dub aegis) and through Sentrax as Lull, in addition to other sporadic projects, his genre-spanning activities have done much to jar the minds, expectations, and record collections of audiences previously kept aggressively opposed. Musically, much of the output has been minimalist beats with an emphasis on very deep basslines. Despite its dub resemblances, Scorn is often associated with industrial and experimental music and is considered a rare example of a successful industrial/downtempo crossover artist. Scorn have released a number of increasingly well-received full-length recordings, including the remix LP Ellipsis, which features outbound reworkings by the likes of Coil, Autechre, Laswell, and Germ. 2007 saw Harris return to the studio after a period of low output from the Scorn project resulting in the release of the long awaited Stealth on Brooklyn's OHM Resistance label. Recently Scorn has released two 12"s on Combat Records including the mammouth Super Mantis, a typically slow and dirty halfstep riddim, bursting at the seams with bass pressure and coated in a thick gloop of dank synth pads.... Mick rarely makes it out of the studio to perform these days but he’s been working on a new live set which he’s assured me is going to be DIRTY AND RAW AND LARGE!

Chasing Shadows

Emerging Bristol producers and HENCH’s most recent addition Chasing Shadows caused a big splash with their Damien Marley inspired track It Was Written. More recently they have released Dr Sin and The End, both exquisite pieces of dark, moody, cinematic dubstep with grinding electronic style synth bass. Chasing Shadows have been receiving heavy support from Plastician, Mary Anne Hobbs, N-Type & Benga and look to have a big future ahead.

Ironside

The man, the myth. Mongrel’s most regular and most versatile stalwart dj will this time be turning his attentions to a genre spanning low tempo assault.

Waxmouse

Support form dubsteppa Waxmouse with some deep, dark and dubby goodness.

Current Value

For reasons beyond our control SPL will not be coming to Europe this month. But to replace him we have the mighty CURRENT VALUE taking over headline duties in the main room!!! One of the finest producers on the scene Current Value's unique sound has taken the world by storm. His style is undoubtably hard and brutal but his intelligent drum pitching and programming means that Current Value's production is far more that a thoughtless and noisy onslaught. This is the finest in experimental dnb on the edge!!

Trace

The Godfather of techstep, the first producer to sample the Reese bassline in The Mutant Remix back in ’95 and founder of the mighty DSCI4 Records- Trace’s influence on drum&bass is enormous. Whilst he has taken a back seat in the production stakes of late his DSCI4 label, which catapulted such artists as Black Sun Empire to great success, has continued to push boundaries and develop the sound that he pioneered.

Anorak

Having recently released his debut ep on LoveLove Records Anorak looks destined for big things. Expect a set of heavy dnb thru to storming breakcore and hardcore.

Resinate

Promising breakcore producer from the Life4Land stables Resinate of Jungle Syndicate joins us for a late set of scrambled beats and jiggery pokery.

Amen Homes

Long standing friend of the Mongrel family and morning TV legend Amen Homes will be kicking things off with some beats and bass.

Mongrels Svengali and Porkchop in support as per.

Room three will once again bring you the best cheeseboard you’ve had since Christmas with unashamed djs Teadoom, Pupfish, DJ CJD Silo, Spinthief and Big Show

I can't make it up to Bristol.

That lineup is fucking amazing though. Current Value was mindblowingly sick at Bangface. Chasing Shadows, Scorn and Jamie Vex'd are also sick!!!

This was a fucking KILLER night. Well done Sven... and nice to meet you! Awesome birthday fun was had! Really enjoyed your set downstairs.

Current Value was absolutely brutal... amazing. I'd really lost my way with DnB until seeing CV at the Bangface Weekender and if anything, I think I enjoyed the set last night even more. Brilliant.

Jamie Vex'd was the standout though... just the right level of chummy tunes and melodic weirdness. I nearly fucking cried when he played that Archangel remix.

Yeah, I guess you had some tough competition with the night on at Lakota, but the vibe was spot on, I thought, even if it was a bit 'spacious' in places!

Soundmurderer and Jahba are both HIGH up on my list of people I haven't seen and need to... I'll keep my eye on that night!
