Percussive funky that mixes well with dubstep?

Post by citizen » Wed Apr 29, 2009 12:14 pm

Hmmm...I've been pretty skeptical about this whole funky thing for some time, seeing it as little more than a variation of house, but I've been hearing *some* tunes lately that have changed my mind on it.

Mostly, its the ones that have the mad percussion, crazy patterns, congas, tribal elements etc - it sounds very different to the straighter four-to-the-floor housey stuff. It can sound quite tough, as opposed to some of the girlier funky stuff. Heard Ramadanman play a few things that caught my ear like this.

Can anyone please recommend some releases in this vein that I might like? Digital/viny,l it doesn't matter, cause I roll with both.

Cheers!

I am not an expert by any means and I’m sure the Djs and Producers on here can give far more detail however I'd say check Marcus Nasty and Mac10 on Rinse as they plays a lot of that stuff also check Fingerprint on Rinse and Hardhouse Banton on Deja Vu

Also check Cooly Gs mix on here (link by boomnoise)

Also check this thread

http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

As for the tunes a lot of the time the info is not given out on the shows or via track listings…

But heres a few I rate (not all of them are tribal\ afro latin and 1 or 2 are old and in some cases spellings\names may be wrong as I got them from some of shows on occasions where they have given the info out.

You should be able to youtube or preview them on juno bm-soho etc

Try these-They are more at the tougher end I'm guessing the vocal stuff like Right here DJ Naughty Remix and I'm Leaving on Cooly Gs mix (both of which I rate by the way) are not your style?

Yeh, I am in the same boat. Been looking around and a good introduction I found was Grevious Angel's Funky Manifesto: http://grievousangel.net/GAMixes/FunkyManifesto.mp3
This is not a mix. Rather, this is a compilation of the best UK Funky I could find, taken from radio shows.
What I do know is that this stuff absolutely rocks. Funky skeptics, start here.
Cheers for the links/names, will be sure to check them out!
