Guildford Scene

Post by akilles » Wed May 13, 2009 10:58 pm

Easy all

So I'm dropping out of my uni course at Bournemouth to go to ACM in guildford in september. I want to start up a dubstep night there, first night to start in october/november and then occur on a bi-monthly basis.

What I want to know from you guys is whether there is already a scene there?

And also any DJ's that are from Guildford (or surrounding areas) that fancy playing on the opening night, either reply to this or PM me.

Cheers

good luck! would love to see a dubstep night in guildford but not sure if it would work. used to live there and went to the acm, only time it had a good music scene was b4 the police clamped down on the illegal raves.

there is now only one place that does dnb (occasionally) the boilerroom but no-one has really done any proper dubstep nights as there is no scene.

have thought that maybe its just coz no-one tried yet but I reckon u would still have to go the surrey uni to find enough people into it. all the ravers in guildford are a bit behind and still listen to acid techno, breaks and dnb zzzzz

anyway, ur not far from london :)

Guildford is a hole of a place in terms of culture and diversity. All the clubs are owned by the same guy who is a business man with no interest in music so all the clubs play cheese. The only places even likely to play anything are the star, platform 9 (which is closed) and the boiler room... but it is very rare and over crowded. I hate Guildford with a passion as I go uni there. The uni is cool, the town is a waste. Capitalism at it's grim and bitter height. I feel sorry for people that have to grow up round there.

On a lighter note, if you do what we did and walk about 4 hours out of guildford there's some really pretty and inspiring countryside. I recommend taking some mates and walk in one direction until you get to a little village pub, then have a meal. This is how I found enjoyment that touches deep down... Guildford is shallow... but great if your a rich girl who needs the latest designer clothes... but i aint.

Mr Kulture forgot to mention that there were 2 dubstep events at Surrey Uni last year, both of which he played at lol. It is probably the only place in Guildford where you can really do what you want music wise. Even then, we only used the smaller club downstairs of the main Union. We wanted to hold a bigger event at the Union. This was rejected.

Of the 2 nights that we held, we had Chef, Oneman B2B Braiden, Cotti, Kulture, Afterdark & Boomnoise.

Once my friend and I get back from Paris and back to Uni, we will be holding an event. Hopefully a big one at the main union (1600 capacity, but i doubt that many people would come haha) So, keep your eyes peeled. We have a few things in the bag.

The only problem about holding it in Guildford itself is that you only have those chavy clubs and a couple of 'cool' bars.

I do remember one day I snuck into ACM one day and putting up posters on the walls and noticeboards.

hmm, i'm not dj, but i'm from aldershot (just up the road a bit from guildford) i've finally got my monitors sorted, so i can finally start pushing tunes out on a higher quality basis and will have a lot of stuff being done in my 12 weeks off after breaking up from school, so i'd let you play some local dubs if you want? i might be intrested in turning up, but i'm only 16. the best local artist you'll probably get to play with persuasion is vista. (think he's on here somewhere)

Those are the old events, the uni is pretty against all music that isnt cheese which is annoying, as already said we got rejected for an event in the larger part of the union.

We will see if something can get sorted, would have to test the waters again cause those events where in 07 and did alright considering that people have had their brains fried with cheese.

there was at one time a vibrant DIY punk scene going on in guildford, largely thanks to a few really motivated and talented individuals. the gigs ususally ended being quite busy.

the tydirium crew that worked at Dance2 used to put on nights upstairs at Bojanglez which admittedly were pretty few and far between but again were quite busy. I think steve ended up reaching the semis of one of the dmc championships? also, from what I remember, we had a few artists like jehst and that come down to play gigs at packed out pubs like the cannon (on the portsmouth road, dunno what it's called now).

pineapple tribe used to to do big raves in the woods (as someone mentioned) on that enormous blue sound system, and I'm guessing there was loads of other stuff going on in the surrounding towns/villages.

this was all ages ago, I'm not sure what it's like now, but it goes to show that it doesn't matter where you are, where there's a will there's a way. guildford might have a lot of middle-of-the-roadness about it, but it's a commuter town, and very much like a lot of the towns a similar distance from london. ultimately, the people who care about what they do will move to london to do it because it's so close.

i suppose there's an argument to say that because london is so close, you might as well do your thing there than in guildford, but if you've got to do it in guildford, it's been done before so it can be done again. instead of rolling a joint and watching eastenders, go and find a pub landlord/record shop owner/church warden and have a chat.

FFS CHEESE!? I've had cheese down here for two fucking years!...

Anyway.

Cheers for the info people. To be honest I'm determined to make this happen, even if the place is a music-void. Uni of Surrey is pretty big and ACM has at least some people there. Although I might have to disguise the night as a DnB night (have two rooms) although not quite sure who that might attract...I'll get thinking.

I'm returning to Surrey Uni next year for final year so hopefully things will have picked up a bit... otherwise I'm going elsewhere for entertainment.

loving this thread lol!!

Also had the bad fortune to study at Surrey (agreed, that was good, the town is waste!!!) and ran a night there for 5 years and then one in the town for a couple of years too.

Reckon it is poss to do good things there but you're always going to come up against all the problems and twats mentioned above - so true, and it just makes me chuckle as i'm now out of it - but i remember how much it used to piss me off!!

Do your thing guys - you never know, there might be some cool people around - just ban girls in Jack Wills..unless it's round their ankles! Ya get me.
