Hip-Hop as good as Dead Prez 'Let's Get Free'?..Similar

Post by Pistonsbeneath » Sat May 30, 2009 9:48 pm

i know about all kinds of hip-hop like cannibal ox, mos def, dalek, pharcyde, roots, gil scott heron, dilated peoples amongst many others but i was wondering if anyone could recommend anything in the style of dead prez that's as good..lyrically and on a production level...

i do know a lot of hip-hop so anything obvious i will be aware of....

thanks!

this is pretty much my standard response for anyone ask for a recommendation of hip hop but....

blu and exile - below the heavens

not as political as dead prez but lyrically amazing
and the production is awesome

Quite similar to common, talib, that sort of stuff.
I'd probably put this in my top 10 (almost 5 i think) favourite hip hop albums of all time.

you need to clarify

- if you're looking for artists with similar subject matter/lyrics.. check out the coup, public enemy, paris, (90s) ice cube. mcs that would be labeled as political or pro-black
- if you're looking for similar bass heavy keyboard beats.. check out productions by timbaland, droop-e, lil jon, mannie fresh. producers that would be labeled as crunk, hyphy, bounce or just southern

the crossover between those two sounds isn't that common really.

i meant what i said innit..a crossover of the two is sounding like dead prez...i have everyone you listed save for mannie fresh...

theres that track on the album called police state & also behind enemy lines that i can't get enough of...hip hop whilst good is their dancefloor tune...it's those tunes i love the most atm
