Old school Hip Hop beats
I have the hardest time trying to create an old school hip hop drum sound.. like sorta reverby, loud poppin snare, etc... you know what i mean.. do you think they mostly used drum machines?? to get that more natural sound? and were most real drum grooves ? either as is or thrown into a drum machine? anybody have any tips or anything for making that kinda smooth nod-your-head groove using just a DAW. (i use fl studio by the way). .. sorry this is vague but any info or knowledge on this subject would be great!! thanks
If you don't have the real thing, hi-quality 808 samples will be your friend in this pursuit.
Lots of breaks and other drum machines were used, but nothing more so than the 808 for old school.
Actually... now that I think of it....
Sure, you can scour the web and come up with some half-ass, lo-bit samples quite easily... OR you can pay a super-cheap amount (considering the quality) for hi-res awesomeness...

In addition to a LOAD of vintage drum machines painstakingly recorded to tape and sampled in hi rates for cheap... the guy also has a whole page of freebies.
Big respect to Goldbaby.
