How good are you at using synths?

Post by futures_untold » Wed Jun 03, 2009 7:57 pm

How much do you feel you know about creating your own sounds using synths, samplers and effects?

Do you struggle to make the types of sounds you hear in your favourite tunes? Can you produce the filthiest basslines on demand?

This poll is to see how many of us are blaggers, and how many of us are maestros! :)

Which modular system do you use?

I know how you feel. when a synth only has so many controls and fixed routing, it can feel stiffling... :(

futures_untold + The_Dza88 = sabotage :|

:D

Anyway... Somewhere between option 2 & 3... Making good use of mah synths is my main focus atm. I don't even try and make tunes anymore.
I want to have a large palette of sounds and be able to create the sounds I want and I'm not quite there.
Just bought the Dance Music Manual & wait for Rob Papen's sound design DVD.
In the meantime : experiment, experiment, experiment!

Haha, I'm almost the complete opposite. I use samples when I can be arsed, otherwise I make sounds from scratch! :o

Regarding making complex sounds, as Daft tnuc has pointed out, spending time exploring the capabilities of your synths & effects allows you to build up an understanding of how things work.

There isn't actually much to it. Oscillators make noise, filters change the noise, and FX effect the noise. Using modulation sources such as ADSRs, LFOs and step sequencers creates movement in your sound when they have been routed to modulate certain parameters on your synth.

an example of using modulation is to route n LFO to every filter control + the pitch controls + any other control possible. It will sound messy, but it will be complex!!!! If you work backwards, then one can begin to understand where to route the modulation sources when aiming to achieve certain sounds...
