Funky House/UK Funky??? What a load of wank

Post by miscreant » Sun Jun 14, 2009 8:41 am

I havent heard a lot of this stuff, just the odd tune old schoolfriends from my london days post on their facebook and from time to time stuff that pops up on here but fuck me it is dire.

i genuinely cant see what the fuss is about, everything ive heard has sounded like really poorly produced bender house music. I love a bit of squelchy electro house but the only place i can imagine this kind of music going down well is in a gay club. It seems to be appealing to quite a range of people but why?? Is it just a case of people who have no opinion on music jumping on a bandwagon created by some jobseeker with a sampler and a samba pack?

If theres good stuff out there then i'd genuinely like to hear it!

And whats with this "skanking" bollocks i keep hearing about, have london trends literally got to such a ridiculous low that people at these nights will not only be enjoying this total shite but all be copying eachother doing the exact same dance?

please enlighten me.

Just to clear up, UK Funky isn't the same as Funky House.

Yes,

UK Funky is made by dubstep producers that dont like the name "fidget house" from what I can tell. (in case no one can sense the sarcasm here, this is a joke.)

Where as funky house has been around since time began, give my 5 mins i'll post some differences.

I mean, they are both pretty cheesy genres of music like all house, but UK funky is more fidget in terms of melodies and percussion.

i am definitely hearing some poor examples of this stuff then, nothing that i have heard from either uk funky or funk house, whatever their differences may be has been remotely fidgetty, that fidget house stuff is quality. the stuff im talking about is nothing like fidget, as i said, its just house beats with samba percussions. Some of yous must know the stuff i'm talking about, if i wasnt at work i could post some prime examples of it but t-mobile dont like people having fun at work.

This is sort of funky house, as i understand it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ2__XLJHsY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh9okdVz0I4

This to me is what "Funky House" is, if you take note of the basslines in the 2nd and 3rd link there is alot of funk influence on the riff. Hence the "funky" in funky house.

EDIT: Another example of a really funky bassline.

Yeah, I know. My uncle's got a studio and some of the DJ's down their spin a lot of 'UK Funky' or whatever it is, and fuck me, it's uber-shit. Alot of birds who generally hang about the place like a bunch leeches lose their shit over it, though, apparently it's really nice to dance to.

Sounds like a load of gay bollocks to me.

oooooh hit a nerve did i? just the type of response i'd expect from a funky house bummer. I've asked to be shown some good examples of it as i want to hear the good stuff, the small amount i have heard has been enough to justify this thread being started, have a look throughout this whole site guaranteed you'll find plenty of threads you could give answers like yours to.

This was the tune that i thought was really shit when i first heard it.......tbh i dont reli like it either, but apple seems to make a lot of good other tracks

I liked that last tune, percussion wasn't really my thing tho. But i liked the ideas and melodies.

But again, from my point of view that isn't funky house, theres no funk/soul influence there whatsoever.

To me, this is funky house:

EDIT: If anything it reminded me of some grime tunes hahha....

yeh, it pretty much is that. some tunes are alright but in general it is a massive cheese fest.

abroad there are some sick funky house scenes, but UK always gets the bastardized versions of whatever Europe doesn't want.

i thought it was a load of utter balls until i went out and heard some live, then something clicked and i quite enjoy it in small doses, can't be dealing with most of the really vocal stuff though, i much prefer the percussive instrumental stuff that rosca and lil silva etc. are pushing

edit - the basic point of this was to say, try hearing some live on a big system, in somewhere with a decent vibe, then see what you think

when it's good, it's great

when it's not so good, it's awful
