My netlabel launches - feedback appreciated!

Post by mawltea » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:51 pm

Yo people! I've been working for well over a month now with a webdesign for my netlabel for music & art; marsmelons.com. And now it's finally finished! Sort of. There's still a few articles on some of the artists missing, but there's lots of content to go by, and a total of 18 music releases already! All available to download for free in mp3-format.

Check it out; http://www.marsmelons.com

Not much dubstep on there yet, but there's something on the way from my friend Nylund, and at least one DnB-release too in the near future.

Well, any comments on the music or art or design or the site will be much appreciated!

All graphics on the site hand-drawn by me, and I've done most of the cover art too. :)

Used Textpattern. :) Haven't designed a website for well ove five years, so was a bit of a hassle, but got there eventually. :)

Haha, yeah, it's pretty fun, and easily just as tedious! If you know your html and CSS, then Textpattern is pretty easy to learn. I think it's quite a lot more flexible than for instance Wordpress when it comes to designing around it. Back in the day when I used to design some websites, tables were the shit, but now everything has switched to CSS, so I had to learn that almost from the beginning, working with divs and all that, but it's pretty easy once you get into it.

But thanks for kind words! Promotion is always the worst part. It's going to be hard, but I'll try! :) If you decide to try out Textpattern and ever need help on something, give me a holler, and maybe I can help you. :)

i suggest only releasing stuff you really like. thats what i like about net labels... it isn't really a gamble because you're not releasing stuff you think will sell, just the stuff you want.

I get some hits on the site and it grows all the time. people from all over the world check it out and all i did was make a few internet profiles. myspace and last.fm... i think the last.fm one is confusing and i'd rather make tunes than make more internet profiles atm. Mainly people from my own town check the site out.

your site looks professional and makes my site look like a 3 yr old made it :P

i also suggest using google analytics... i didn't see it in your source code. its free and gives you all kinds of info about your site.

Oh yeah, I'm doing that already. I basically started the label to release my own and my friends' music, to document what we're making, even though it's not making big headlines.

Local town, yeah? Think I'm gonna print a bunch of stickers when I get home and plaster them all over. Thanks for the tips, man!

And your site doesn't look bad at all! Doesn't have all that much graphics, but it's easy to find what you're looking for, and that's the whole point, well done, man. :)

thats pretty much the same reason why i started my label! :D

a friend of mine just told me a neat way she gets her name out there. she made a bunch of cheap business cards that look nice because shes a graphics designer... she goes to the mall and a bunch of other clothing stores and puts her cards in some random pants that are on the shelf for sale :P

Haha, that sounds like a neat idea, has it worked well for her? I'll definitely try it! Got a friend who works at a print-shop, so he can print me stuff for free, which is great.
