Post moved, Looking for all the help I can get

Post by twincoxmassacre » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:24 am

Oi, I'm a recently converted listener/turned wannabe creator of dubstep.
You'll have to excuse my spelling, and at times my grammar, I'm strung out on coffee and am off from work for the first time in a week.

I'm originally from the hardcore-grindcore-deathmetal scene, and when I say hardcore I mean the punk/metal moshtastic bloodfest, not the electronic kind.
But when I heard "Unknown Dub" and "Great Shape" on UK-based hardcore band Your Demise new album it was like a revelation, they're such a contrast to the bands energetic hardcore, without sounding misplaced.
I've diped my cup in some breakcore and goa at times, but the sheer power of dubstep has had me hooked.
At the moment I've been listening to some Benga, Caspa, Rusko, Skream and for some reason alot of Estonian dubstep.

Now I'm really, really interested in creating music, and was wondering if anybody could give me any tips on apps for PC like reason 4, FL7, goldwave and perhaps a few pointers. I've got very little experience in producing/editing/mixing seeing as I've only ever sung and at times played some bass.
I've got this... "idea" floating around in my head, a kind of dubstep-grindcore crossover, with some pigsqueal vocals and really heavy drops, but slower than ordinary grind, but still a breakcore-like sound.
Shit, that got messed up, trying to get out of my head.

What I'm asking for is not a "Dubstep for dummies"-guide, nor a list of artists that I should like to be considered "in"... and... uh... I kinda lost my train of thought. I'm confusing myself right now, but nevermind.

I'm well aware of the "search"-function and that there might be similar posts littering the bottom of the forum list, but If you have any of these post in mind, just link them!
Just post whatever you think would be helpful to a humble idiot willing to learn. Any tips are welcome mates, cheers!

Welcome to DSF :D

For someone who is just coming into the production side of things, I'd suggest just reading up on simple stuff around the Production forum to build up your knowledge of production techniques... the Production Bible which is stickied at the top of the list of threads is a good place to start to learn how to sculpt your sounds :)

In terms of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) platform, I'd suggest looking on Youtube at the way that each of them are set up (Reason 4, Cubase, Logic if you're on a Mac or Fruity Loops are good starting points :D)... From there, you can always download the demos of each of the software, and there are a fair amount of free DAWs sitting around on the internet, and they're pretty good too! I'm sure Futures will plug Reaper, which is a good free DAW to start your first steps...

When you're starting to produce, it's easy to overshoot your ability levels to begin with... I'd say, if you started small, and worked your way up, you could produce your screaming, wobbling Death-dub in no time ;)

Hope this helps!!

I know you said that you didnt want to get a list of artist names that you migt like but if you are a metal fan you have got to check out Distance - My demons (album) and Repercussions (album). They will blow you fucking socks off.

Also hit me up on the PM if you fancy doing a collab or need some feedback. My tracks have a strong metal influence as well so I would be glad to offer any feedback on EQing guitars and the like.

Welcome to Dubstep bro!!

Peace
