Over a year in the making, countless hours logged, blood, sweat, and tears poured into it, and it's day has finally arrived, Enter: DUB RAP. Ricky Switch's newest mixtape: Dub Rap Volume1, featuring One Drop. Put your seat belts on it's gonna be a bumpy ride, but if your ears are ready to hear the future of music, stay tuned....

Rewind four years prior, to a remote island off the north coast of Ireland where a young, but seasoned DrumNBass DJ named Ricky Switch was first being being exposed to wobble basslines, boom bap slaps, and a whole new sound of music which he soon found himself engulfed in, Dubstep. Shortly after, Ricky packed his bags and moved out to California, the San Francisco Bay Area to be exact. He found his way DJ'ing the few Dubstep and DnB shows that he could find, and doing so he also became involved in the local hip hop scene, where he joined the underground rap group Distant Relatives. In due course, he would share a studio with local Bay Area Rapper Starski, and while Ricky would be bumping dubstep dj sets in one room, Starski and his crew were knocking out raps in the other. It was only a matter of time before peanut butter met the chocolate and Reese's Pieces was made, or as they call it Dub Rap.

During the process of working on the mixtape, they created a marriage the authentic sounds of UK Dubstep music and hardcore underground bay area MC's and singers. Instantly, the artists became fully engrossed in the sounds and space that Dubstep offers a vocalist and found many ways to deliver their art form. The Dub Rap sound that came out of this experience is an intense mix of otherworldly sounds courtesy of UK Dubstep rhythms, and the future of bay area and worldwide hip hop music.

This project was done with much praise and respect given to the originators of Dubstep, and the producers who made the music that made this mix possible. It's aimed at giving the genre another avenue to allow it to grow and to expose more people to it's undeniable sound and originality. The core artists (the mcs/ singers) involved have no doubts that they will continue to work within this medium of art to allow their creative juices to flourish and expand on an ever broadening horizon of Dubstep visions. Their is no question that the genre of "Dubrap" will catch on with other artists the world over, and allow rappers and singers alike to grow into the next millennium of audio murder: Dubstep and now Dubrap.[/img]

been listening to this for the last few days now as really wanted to be sure of what I had to say before saying it as this is one mix I really, really wanted to like. Coming from a split electronica and hip hop background over the last 20 years and having slowly generated a massive love for dubstep this read like a dream........

First listen it seemed to sit all wrong with me although I could not knock production values - Really, really good to hear tracks that don't just sound like any old random bars / accapelas dropped over beats - for some reason some of the flows just seemed to be at odds with the beats.

4 or 5 listens in and it's definitely got me where I wanted it to take me. I still feel a couple of tracks don't sit well but overall a massively engaging concept well executed and it's even given me a new perspective on well rinsed and tired tracks like "Eastern Jam"

Much niceness :P and a definite recommendation

Thanks mayne! I appreciate the honesty and the fact that you gave it a few listens before creating a formed opinion. I kind of had the feeling that it would be one those things that you would have to listen to a few times and might kind of be off at first listen. Anyways thanks for the feedback!

thanks man! glad to see you checked it! it's interesting to see who's liking which songs on there and will be cool to see if there are some that stand out to a majority of people, so far it's been pretty across the board.

Lemme just first say that wow, really taking this whole dubrap/thugstep/rapdub/gangstep thing to the next level!

I've too been mixing a lot of hiphop with dubstep (live setup including 2x turns and one CD-deck) recently and can't say I've ever mixed anything as fun as "dubrap" as you now call it. I thought I don't wanna even call myself "a dubstep dj" anymore, more like "thugstep" or... "gangstep dj" or whatever this movement starts to call this kind of music. Peeps can't deny that dubstep coming out lately is getting more and more gangsta with that grimey 140bpm beat centered in playing out the most fucked up basslines known to man; throw in some gangsta vocals and you're set up son.

Funny actually I just recorded a mixtape called "rapsdubz" about a week ago, posted it here but haven't yet got _any_ replies  Got some really positive comments on it on the Finnish dubstep forums tho, check it out:

But yeah, really liked the mix! Not too keen about autotune tho but that's just me, not my thing really. "Fuck that" is thight as hell, awesome lyrics and flow with the MC's and like I've said hundreds of times Sukh Knight is the DON making gangsta beats in the form of dubstep.

Dubrappers don't skank, they boogie 8)

Dubstep Rising

Post by neptune333 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:03 pm

How I would love to see Dubstep music rise from the grimey depth of the underground to spotlight for all to hear, (although I know some are not so eager to see it grow in popularity) but too many people are sleeping on this great music and Dubrap is just one catalyst to help it grow and expand its fanbase...at home and abroad...
its too good to be kept secret, especially amongst the hip hoppa's and MC's who haven't yet realized the supadope producers makin these slaps...RESPECT

What is important, is that diferents topics has been defined with respect to the title for each original track. We can't heard "We raprazent the westcoast blablabla..." or whatever. The MC let the dubstep play and bring something more to the track.

By the same way, grime mcing on Dubstep can be huge too. When I saw Virus Syndicate with MK1 rapin on of their track on a Rusko track it was amazing !

I like this. Really thought through and well produced vocals on here. Almost sounds like original tunes alot of them. Big up. Nice work.

BUT IMO, there's a big lack of the original producers names in the tracklist/filenames... they are pretty big part of this sounding so well all in all...

[EDIT... sorry.. they're typed nicely in the "info" though... :D ]

this mixtape is major. seriously hype, if this doesn't get a party poppin off then it's filled with zombies.

loving this sound. any live events planned around this in the bay area? something to seriously consider.

also, i'll paypal $20 to the first person to get keak da sneak on a dubstep riddim.

they're also credited very well in the back cover art, which is more than can be said for most hiphop albums....

at first when i heard snoop doggs re-make of eastern jam i wasn't that impressed with hip hop artists dealing with dubstep but after hearing this im totally heading towards the other way. guys this is some sick shit! ive listened to each track atleast 5 times this morning :) theres a few tracks that don't live up to the others but apart from this, verrrrry impressed!
