Question for the djs (big and small)

Post by hellfire machina » Sat Jul 18, 2009 3:01 pm

In an average set, how many of your own or your crews tunes do you drop?

Do you find you favour the tunes of those around you or do you actively search out new artists/tunes as well?

I wouldn't say that I'm a top tier dj in this scene by any means (I've not been spinning dubstep that long, 12 years of tearout breaks before it), so due to the fact I know I'm not gonna have the latest benga (insert top name here) dubplate to drop it's forced me to search out artists that are up and coming or unknown. In doing this I've seen these artists grow and some of them are on the cusp of blowing up bigtime.

To the bigger djs on the board -

Do you find that since you have a plethora of dubs to play from the other big artists, you find yourself not seeking out as many artists on the up and up that are outside of your crew or artists outside of your direct vicinity?

I mostly put in 3 or 4 of my own tunes, depending on the party.

If a promoter asks me to play a lot of my own tunes, or course I will.

other than that, I trow in a lot of tunes from the crew, as many as I can. I prefer them over the main bangers, love to play tunes no-one heard before.

oh, and im a small DJ hehe.

Well seen as I dont produce, I play everyone elses stuff.

But if I did produce, it would depend entirely on the crowd (Whether is be knowlegdable in Dubstep or not) and what the promoter is looking for

Sometimes I just totally forget about playing my own tunes (was always a vinyl-only DJ so just forget about my cd's most of the time :)) other times I'll play 4 or 5.. all depends

I'm always looking for new stuff... be it a larger release or something from an up and comer that just rocks. there's a TON of new talent nowadays and a lot of the folks are stoked to have you playing their stuff. It's dope to play tunes that not everyone else has also.

I search for music at least an hour or 2 a day. Blogs, forums, beatport and other sites... I tend to find a shitload of stuff and it's almost fucking impossible to keep up with it haha.

always seeking out new stuff- but i only play tunes that sounds proper production wise, no muddy mixdowns anything. doesnt matter if its my best friends tune, i wont play it if its dodgy.

the people listening/attending/paying cover deserve the best i can give them and i wont sacrifice that jus to play some obscure stuff.

if its good its good, ill play it. doesnt matter who made it. its just hard to find quality mixdowns/mastering from up and comers for the most part unfortunately.

to the up and coming producers out there, GET YOUR TUNES MASTERED. its well worth the price and patience.

that being said, i dig your tunes hellfire machina!! keep up the good work!

Personally I love playing the up and comers stuff. I always try to throw in some local stuff (usually by people I know, as well as some of my own) because I like to support the locals as much as I can.

I also generally try to throw in a couple well known tunes because that will always draw people in and make them pay more attention to the tracks mixed before and after them.

i guess to a point you will be limited by the sheer amount of dubs you're given...even after filtering out the shit you've got a lot of tunes that are decent to play out...therefore won't need to look

when i did radio i used the dubs section here lots. talked to people at raves, friends who produce, obviously buy the fresh ish from the shops too, so really we used to play a big mix of unreleased cuts from new people, released 320 from people we had good relations with, and purchased stuff.

obviously the same applies for playing out, but sometimes setup limits playing unreleased stuff as a. i don't own serato etc and b. some places i've played here in portugal don;t have cdjs. the horror!

hope that's of some use. are you jody btw as we used to be on breaks fm

edit. for the record i am a bad mother fucking dj, but i'm not big. this is obvious as you haven;t heard of me! -w-

it is ESSENTIAL that everyone supports the up & coming artists in any scene.
Music scenes can be damaged by DJ's not doing this. For instance a lot of "big" DJ's do not care about anybody who doesn't send them tunes already.
(It can be very hard to even contact certain people about adding them to mailing lists or even sending them free vinyls!!!)
This (IMO) is what sets n-type apart from any other dubstep DJ. Obviously he has an huge amount of the freshest dubs from the biggest artists available to him, But he still showcases the material of up & coming producers as well.

A lot of other main room DJ's have no time for other people making waves in the scene. This can lead to their sets sounding monotonous and having a lot less variation. This could also lead to a scene drying up as well. If the biggest DJ's aren't supporting the freshest music, what kind of scene is it?
There are a lot of unsigned/Up & coming producers who are making just as good (of not better) tunes as the people we regard as "big"
So support them!
after all

All that is essential is that good music is repped over bad music, regardless of who makes it.

I exclusively play my own stuff and just make up new aliases so no one realises ;)

Seriously tho i think producers should play fresh beats and often they are getting booked coz of their own productions therefore rinse them out....if there is other music you are feeling and feel it will enhance the set then drop that too.
