Turntables

Post by s i c k b o y » Tue Jul 28, 2009 11:26 pm

Hi guys
I am looking into getting some vinyl turntables and having a go at DJing. I have done a bit of research but to be honest I don't know very much about turntables. I am also very limited on price, im looking to spend around £200-£250 for 2 decks and a mixer.
I have found these two links and wondered if anyone who has some knowledge on this subject could have a look at them for me and let me know if these are reasonable quality/good for the price/good for a beginner.

+1 for used technics

Save up a bit more, don't waste it on cheap decks.. lots of second hand technics i've seen for sale also come with a decent mixer, like pawn shops often sale the whole package as usually the person who pawned it sold off all related equipment. If you must settle for something less, read lots of user reviews and stay far the fuck away from belt drive decks. Avoid those "DJ battle packages" they like to sell in guitar stores.

there are a good many different brands that make great quality decks nowadays, but none in your price range.

save up and get some worth owning :W:

I'm not a DJ but I picked up a Technic 1210 off ebay for about £150 so that I could sample stuff off vinyl. Itching to get another one and a better mixer now. Thing with Technics is they're tried and tested so at least you know it's going to be dependable and last you a long while.

Numark, Stanton, and Vestax all upped their game in the beginning of the century and left Panasonic in the dirt pretty quickly

1210's + Mixer + Amp = £270 for me

Keep saving and keep checking back on ebay, you'll save a fortune and it's so satisfying to own 1210's as opposed to "entry level decks"

entry level decks + mixer = £250

1210's at usual price = £400?

combined total £650

seem's a no brainer doesn't it?

I just got a pair of technics, there's really no reason not to go for second hand ones (just be patient!). Stantons and Vestaxes are great, maybe equal in quality. Honestly though they're only a good buy in comparison if you get them second hand too. Technics don't go bad, and after a few years a tune up is all they should need.

This guy talks sense.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

i recently upgraded from cheap DJ decks to 1210's. It depends what you want from them really. Starting out with cheap ones is good for conditioning you, so that when you do upgrade, everything is a lot smoother and simpler.

I managed to recoup 50% of what I paid for my original set, and bought my 1210's second hand too.

Agree with the advice above to avoid belt drive. I basically bought the cheapest direct drive I could find, and they were great for 3 years. But when I got the opportunity to use 1210's for the first time I was amazed at the difference, didn't think it was possible for there to be such a difference in quality and torque.

So yeah, I'd actually recommend a cheaper set for a beginner, jumping in and buying big expensive equipment when you don't know what you're doing is a bad idea I think.

doesn't matter if there are other decks that have better features than technics tbh, if you are even slightly considering playing out, you need to practice on technics, because thats all clubs ever have. you can bitch and moan about them not having +/-50 pitch or key preservation or whatever, but at the end of the day you can be amazing on a pair of vestax but when you get on technics they handle differently and they dont have the extra features, so its gonna fuck you over in a club situation.

plus technics dont break hardly ever.

yea shame techs never upgrade feats or motors
bullshit industry standard imo how long its been same
if pioneer cd decks never changed still be cd cue mode no vinyl emulation

techs may be standard but a bullshit one just due to never changing

True I know lots of people who don't like 'em, I for one don't know much about decks, I know there are a lot out there that have better features, may have better torque etc

but these guys have been going for what 20 years? for the price you're getting good value and you know they aint gonna break down on you in a hurry

well i mean simple economics
go on ebay local pawn shop etc techs been around for how long?
gonna be 1200, 1210, or 1250
pdx 150 or ttm (though ttm prone to issues)
techs diff feats clicking 0 pitch and gold plated arms and what 16+/-
same engine
pdx and 150 built like tanks just no service centers like techs cause rarity
i mean if techs really upgraded i wouldn't shit on em but industry standard cause common and cheap flooded secondhand market
always can find em

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I would love to have some technics but I currently have no source of income that I can save up, so I think for the foreseeable future technics are out of the question - Im finding single 1210s for the price Im looking to spend on a pair of decks and a mixer haha.

My mate bought second hand technics as his first turntables and he said that they are definately worth it but equally if I can't afford them then cheaper turntables could be a good place to start - like when you start playing guitar you don't need the best guitar to start off with.

Does anyone think it would be worth getting cheaper decks that I can afford rather than waiting for technics, because it will be quite a long time before I can afford them. I know overall it would be more expensive to buy cheap decks and then buy better decks later, but Im not sure I want to commit £350+ for a pair of techs... that is a lot of money to me at the moment.
