Darqwan is a badman, we all know this. The 1st Dubstep tune i heard was Darqwan-Wear the Crown. These days i DJ his sort of sound, the more old raw sort of Dubstep, but i struggle to try and create the sound when it comes to producing. I use Reason 4 and was basically wandering if anyone could give me some tips on building these older influenced sort of beats. The deep sub basses and grime sounding wobbles and any drum tips aswel.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Lets start off by saying you have good taste! Oris Jay is a badman and does not get enough respect these days tbh.

He has loads of Jungle influence in his tracks. He also makes Breakstep and that is a bit like his Dubstep with the sounds he uses but it has a break looped.

His bass is often an 808bd, sometimes two layered. Loads of compression and play with filters/distortion. Shame there is not more people making stuff with big bass! everyone is on the commercial pop sounding Dubstep.

Nice intro! I like the vocal, I cannot understand what he says (which is good) and it fits with the vibe. I would get rid of the sample that says Reggae music, its cheesy and you are not making Reggae:) does not fit with the vibe of the track.

The bass (wump wump) that comes in at 0:55 I would use in the intro a bit also. Then at 0:55 have a a drop and introduce some big booming 808s.

Second half of the track I would delete and come up with something better from the first part of the track.

I really like the intro tho!

Dont worry about adding loads of percs. The intro has enough Reverb'd sounds to carry the track with very little else. Look at some Loefah tracks and other DQ1 stuff to see good examples of space and POWER.

This man OP program a sparse rhythm, I mean SPARSE, focus on making it as head bobbin as you can without filling the room up, stay simple on your basses, as serox said stuff like 808s and simple sine sub wobbles and ect can go very ... from there its use your ear match samples or synth patches for melodies n shit...

Yeah definately his name is not mentioned enough. So your saying he uses the actual bass drum for his basses?
I know what you mean man not enough chest rattlin these days, when i 1st heard Wear the Crown a couple of years ago it was in my car and it was just amazingon the bass. Been in love with that style ever since.

Often he does yes. But in Wear The Crown I dont think it is 808 bass driven. It has some other synth going wuuuuuump. Loads of reverb on it but I am not sure exactly what it is. Could be a square wave with tweaked ADSR + processing.

Yeah was a vague question but ive got some good ideas from the replies so thanks to you and serox.

Show us what ur making Skimple! I am keen to find producers on the same vibe as me to throw ideas around.

btw mate. I just had a listen to your track in ur sig. I cannot hear any bass in it at all apart from a little wobble now n then! I am admitted on shit headphones at work but I would suggest bringing it either up a few notes or adding some harmonics so you can hear it. I am sure it bangs on a big rig but unless people have a big sub the tune might sound empty without it.

I would aim for a wobble like this for your track if I were you;) I can hear this very well on these £5 headphones.

yea I myself have been toying with this idea, like I really want a more minimal sound for myself personally, less saturated in distortion and more dark and reverby, ill get back to you when I have figured out how to do that better....

yeah this is what i have been going with 4 ages, more mala than burial tho... if ya know wat i mean. i don't listen to fak all music nowadays though... its kinda sad

It may be a good thing tho. I listen to so much music each day when I do go to sit down I often end up trying to replicate something I have been listening. So I get distracted for hours trying to do something but I have no real direction.

If I didn't listen to music so much I may be able to have a clear aim...

try not letting the synths fill the entire frequency spectrum

filter them if they repeat often to leave space

or try using them sparingly like at the end of a bar

i guess i do listen to music.... like i have live mixing practice all week & then a show on friday. Part of course ay. then im in the studio like 3 times a week fucking around. recd a bro playing sax & fukt around with it abit in pro tools. music is always around... just im not really listening... more examining it like. thats the prob with learning to be an audio engineer ay! Yeah this is stuck in my head now

This older more minimal style is the way my newest tunes are moving. Mainly after hearing Kryptic minds- six degrees and being blown away. Less is more!!!
Iv been listening to Kryptic minds, Eskmo and Substep Infrabass Exp and have been very inspired to move away from the 'filth' style my previous tunes have been.

yea def more mala/old skream etc, like I love burial don't get me wrong but im trying to write dancy tunes and burial doesn't really do that for me.
