Learning the 'Theory' of Production
Hey.
I've been tooling around in daws for a year now and have finally started getting a handle on how things work. Just barely.
I want to learn why things work the way they do instead of having to constantly tool around to make a sound, I want to understand why things work the way they do. I'm just that kinda guy.
I found this linked in one of the threads here: http://noisesculpture.com/how-to-make-a ... gn=widget1
Are there any other such resources that you'd suggest?
Thanks in advance!

The Internet.
I'm sure you've heard of it.
Google too.
And YouTube.
And google.
And just fiddling.
Really though.
Not even joking.

This, also make notes while you work, "this knob does this", "that knob does that", if you just write stuff down along those lines eventually your brain will give you the "This knob does this BECAUSE" from context, it'll become second nature, you don't have to be a dictionary on production to get a good sound, it doesn't even really help necessarily. Just work at it, read up, take notes from experience, and read up some more.Hircine wrote:money shot thread, pming people whose mixes or audio designs you like, scrolling through this forum in a daily basis.

Obviously there are shitty sources and good ones. Was hoping someone with the know how could help point out a few good ones.
This thread was most excellent:

Re: Learning the 'Theory' of Production
While understanding synthesis in the theoretical domain is very valuable, I'd recommend (if you haven't already) familiarizing yourself with all the "heavyweight" synths out there (which are fairly limited in number) ==> http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=98973
Re: Learning the 'Theory' of Production
Experience and experimentation. Listen to tunes and try to pick out what effects are used on a particular sound. Take any sound/ sample and just chuck one effect at a time and notice what it does with the sound.
Once you know what they sound like, its time to use them effectively and subtly and freq split etc but thats a whole other topic.

Re: Learning the 'Theory' of Production
Thanks for all the advice.
I downloaded some of the synths in that thread and I'm going to play around with them.
Going to read through a bunch of stuff mentioned in here and other links too. Raven's guide is in my list of things.
I'm not going to have work for a month, so I'm looking forward to dedicating lots of time to this. Hope it helps!
Anyone else?

Copy songs sonically as well as you can. Constantly a/b your tracks with others that have the production quality you're aiming for and dont stop until you at least match it
Re: Learning the 'Theory' of Production
I can make synthesizer songs or solos up to like 5 minutes it just putting it together arranging it I have trouble with.
Maybe I just need more practice.
