Any music that challenges us sonically or as Darkfire says, reflects the darkness and tension of the times, is potentially subversive. As it usually follows that people open to musical experimentation or the almost ascetic route of deep musical meditation tend to challenge other ideas in life including the issues being discussed here. The best music for me is stuff that highlights the tensions between the part and the whole, between art and commerce and between the individual and society and thus challenges you as a listener to question other issues of moral or social import.
It cannot be argued that music does not affect us socially and as a wise comic-book writer once said, with great power there comes a great responsibility. People who say, 'come on, it's just music,' and point accusatory fingers at anyone who reads more meaning or value into it than that, are generally scared of their own conciousness.

I want to write something about dubstep's economic modus operandi but I've got to go to a job interview so I can earn my keep.

precisely my point! these seem to me quite meditative & introverted states of mind, not extrovert ones stimulating an active attitude and not pushing anyone to take action.
but then, again, i'd be happy to be wrong...
does anyone have examples of social or political actions/activities generated by dubstep events or records? maybe i have gaps in my knowledge about the phenomenon...

digital mystikz - anti war dub? u can tell mala is ON THIS TING. wot was that post i read the other day by mala saying something about believing nothing happens for good or bad? hes got his head screwed on for sure.. dubstep is the soundtrack to the begining of the destruction of the ego

what that point lead to in terms of (effective) action?
and how frequent these stands are?
anyway i was asking anyway for some examples of actions (from street action to whatever, anything that made a bit of a difference, changed anything...) generated by the scene.

i hope everyone sees i'm not dissing anything here and i don't mean dubsteppers are lacking political or social conscience at all, i'm saying the music is not pushing you much towards action, more to analysing and meditating...

"dubstep is the soundtrack to the begining of the destruction of the ego" ->wow that would be already a revolution in itself & i also feel it a little bit like that!

alien pimp -> i totally agree with you i don't see dubstep sound pushing you to take actions in your everyday life for better or for worse, other than that i agree with what has been said above about autonomy, reclaiming public places, civil disobedience, etc...

me too, i'd be happy to see tunes pushing people that direction at least
sollabong's "human trade" out on DubKraft is a step that direction, some of my forthcoming tunes with silent poets too, and there's a few more, but not enough of these so we can pretend we can hope for any revolution

ah i've made a few tracks with that kind of feelings , samples etc... but it's just my point of view, i mean it's just music, i never really thought it has a lot to do with "real" life, think about rage against the machine, public enemy etc...
great music, great message but do you really think most of their listeners even understood 25% of what they mean (i don't even speak of acting in the real life), no diss to them tho. just observation.

Public Enemy's antisemitism wasn't really a great message.

Neither was Rage's undergraduate communism come to think of it.

"Freeing yourself from your mind" ??!!
that book teaches you to run from your problems, in this case - your mind, i prefer confronting and solving my problems, in this case working together with my mind to find balance. and, to be honest, we both kinda enjoy it together and we like how we work it and i'd recommend this approach to that guy.
I'm telling you, only your mind, if anything, will help you avoid all the shit we agreed it's upon us!

Thanks for the link, ozols. Seems like this is the book I've been looking for.

"I cannot live with myself any longer." This was the thought that kept repeating itself in my mind. Then suddenly I became aware of what a peculiar thought it was. "Am I one or two? If I cannot live with myself any, there must be two of me: the "I" and the "self" that "I" cannot live with." "Maybe," I thought, "only one of them is real."

Sorry, lety me eloborate.

When a new genre arises, the handful of major record labels will descend and attempt to rebrand the music as their own in order to resell to a mass market. If this happens the genre will be reduced to a fad that sees a huge boom and then a resulting depression or recession due to the faddish interest quickly moving on to the next big thing. The eventual outcome is very bad. This could easiy have happened in 05 or 06. It didn't so bullet dodged.

not really boss, if anything ur "problems" become easier to confront, if not even just being reduced to a "situation". cos ur ego labels things as good and bad, and without that, life just becomes a series of moments to be enjoyed. thats it really.

anyway end of- i forgot this is a music forum lol
