hifi!!
gonna make one of these this weekend, but i'll probably use a 2x2 and go from there. the black ones in this thread look quality for the price

i was leaning towards hifi but got some advice that made me lean back towards monitors
what would you suggest in the hifi world? i get the impression that it's worth spending as much as you can and then you have them for life but then it's into silly money (£2000+ for used aragon palladium
mono amps - so you need two!)
when i realised that i'll probably never afford that i was thinking B&W 685 speakers and Nad 356 BEE amp which people said was a really good combination but then is it really any better than monitors at that price?

how are you going to use 2x2? or you just using it for storage?

Why is HiFi the choice? Just for warming sounding tunes?

yeah basically. not necessarily warmer but easier on the ears - monitor sound can grate after a while
i keep getting conflicting opinions though

Yeah it is interesting.
One thing that cropped up for me was my lass thinks my logitect speakers with sub sounds better than my monitors for my turntables.. granted see is never in the triangle to fully listen to it but it is food for thought.

it depends what she means by "better" - it might just be that your logitech with sub gives a louder/warmer but less "true" bass sound

Yeah maybe...I need a sub for my decks ideally. Not that the Alesis montiors don't give enough bass but more bass can never be a bad thing...unless I move into a terrace house.

Monitor sound definitely grates for me and you can't go wrong with B&Ws... what has been said in favour of monitors? Which monitors would you be getting?

been talking to lohan from search & destroy and he reckons that monitors are fine and everyone he knows has them for their decks
he recommended me KRK RP6s with RP10S sub (bundle for around £500)
now i'm leaning towards
tannoy revolution DC6T floodstanders, probably with
a marantz pm6004 amp. or might get B&W 685 speakers if i'm being nice to my bank balance. i'd have to test to be sure but i don't get the impression that B&W wouldn't be that much better soundwise so i'd be better off futureproofing and getting some speakers i'll be happy with for years to come

badger should have done ages ago, but i must thank you for this thread!!! thanks to expedit i have a great little set up now, and i think it cost less than £100. the only bad moment was going to ikea early doors 2 days after xmas, whilst hanging out my arse, and coming home with the wrong unit... then having to go back and swap it over on the same day when the sale was at its peak.
so my only tip to add to this is make sure you double check the codes for the warehouse before you buy!!! other than that i am well chuffed, so much more vinyl storage than a dj desk costing 2x as much

i don't like mixing on monitors, didn't like mixing on krks either

badg, i'd go for dm685's. everything sounds absolutely brilliant on them
but really its down to preference- monitors will give you that true sound
for mixing, personally i prefer finding myself thinking 'wow this sounds fucking amazing' than 'wow this is so accurate' if you get me

I think that with the speakers it works like that - collect recommendations within your price range and then just give them a listen. Because in the end it doesn't matter what others think, but which sound do YOU prefer. The best way is to take a few different tunes with you and listen through to hear how different stuff sounds on them. Even better, if possible, take them home for a test drive together with the amp you are considering!
When I was buying my speakers, I listened to good several pairs, then went for the soft deep, even a bit muddled sound over the crisp and clean because I just liked it the best.

I'm going to make one of these on the weekend. Is there any way to buy just the top piece of the lack tv bench? Not a massive deal if not but the £42 price tag seems a little excessive for just one bit of wood

you might be able to contact ikea and get one but i doubt it
you could use two of these instead
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10071172/
but that's the same price, and at least with the lack you've got the bottom bit spare if you ever decide to do another one, or you could give/sell it to a mate to do the same. the bottom bit has got screw holes on the top of it but it's not a massive deal
in relation to speakers, i decided to go active in the end, after getting advice from various people. i even went into a hifi shop and they told me to get active even though they don't sell them themselves so that tells you something! just about persuaded myself to shell out for some unesessarily expensive monitors and sub but should be getting a substantial discount at least
