Don't get the hate for them now. I mean Yonkers is the first track any of them have put out which has got any proper success and its not exactly like Tyler calmed down and went all nice for it.

EARL was moderately successful... I remember seeing the video and thinking it was pretty cool, but i kinda forgot about it and moved on (foolishly)

I'm just hating on the idea of them playing reading and Leeds. Of all the main UK festivals to play that probably the best place for them but having gone to reading for the last 5 years I've slowly begun to hate it and the crowd that now go there.

i dislike them because when i first saw them in LA, they came on as an opener, and pretty much cleared the floor
then they started acting crazier and crazier, the weirder they acted, the more attention they got. they didn't start out like they are now, they definitely realized the potential of a gimmick.
they put out some great tunes and then all of a sudden they're like "weee it's fun to sell out" and they appear on Jimmy Fallon / MTV and do censored versions of their songs while jumping on chairs. then they do a Funny or Die video and all the hipsters latched on to them like they were some sort of secret, that pretty much sealed it for me.
they're most definitely horrorcore, it's obvious because they get so upset when they get called that, because it ruins their schtick.
and their best rapper (imo, earl) got sent to boarding school and they just say he's M.I.A.... c'mon guys

i totally agree with you, and it's pretty easy to see through their whole act, but meh, fun music is fun music.

why do you describe their music as fun? just curious... i find that the beats are fairly simplistic and the shock-tastic lyrics don't exactly make me want to party or have fun...
i like the pseudo-intellectual side of them tho, i'm glad they actually put some thought into their lyrics rather than repeating a catch-phrase and tattooing ice cream on their faces...

to be honest, i don't really know. it's just a refreshing change from the type of stuff i normally listen to, with the whole absurdity of the thing thrown in.
and like you said, they've often got some pretty clever stuff coming from them.

Gotta consider who they're modeling their sound and attitude off of
simple sustained basslines force the focus on the lyrics, creepy running synth, detuned basslined.... it's the triple six from the 90's
it's not a bad thing at all in my opinion... it's just a modern spin on what triple six was in the day
not saying they sound close, but song structure wise very similar... every hodgy/tyler beat follows this

Just one thing I noticed. Doesn't really matter but has anyone else noticed the abundance of presets on synths in reason on Yonkers?

Esham was the first truly dark rapper (as far as I know?), tho, if you wanna get all historical and shit.
"Pussy Ain't Got No Face" is the most absurdly sexist song ever.

Yeah, he probably had the first real recording. I think those southern guys have been doing it for just as long, but none of them were really known. Plus, he was only like 14 when Boomin Words... came out. That'll get you some exposure

99% of Esham's shit was whack as all fuck.
And if you want to be all historical and shit, there were plenty of east coast and southern rappers tapping on the darker side of shit in the late 80's early 90's,
Esham was just one of the first to make it a gimmick, and partially why no one honestly gives a fuck about him.

List some records, if you wouldn't mind, plz? I'm curious, I wanna see how Esham relates to shit that came before him. I've only been into rap for like 8 years and didn't grow up in the West so pretty much everything from that period of time and before that is news to me.
You can hear the way Eminem has been influenced by Esham, and how Tyler is in turn influenced by Eminem.

Also, goddamn, reading about this Esham/d12 beef right now. They ruptured his eyeball, bro. That's ridiculous. Even more ridiculous that this went down at the Warped Tour.
