Vocoda has done a few good 'uns that really do capture the vibe, and Breakage for sure as well as a few others (and probably more I haven't heard). But other than that, the 140 jungle productions are where it's at for jungle at the moment. Not the DJ Fresh stuff, but the good stuff that people like Cluekid, LD and LHF have been making.

It's not really jungle at 140bpm though is it? It's too slow to 'feel' like jungle for me at that tempo, even if the same breaks and samples are being used are the same. I can't dance to it the same way, it doesn't quite have the same groove. If I had to label it at all I would call it breakbeat and leave it at that

Yeah, a lot of the "future jungle" releases do just sound like uninteresting breaks, but that's not really what I'm on about. The way Cluekid makes these tunes is just special, you can tell he's a junglist and he has a real repect and love for the sound. I don't think his "140 jungle" tunes sound like generic breaks tunes at all, they're far closer to the vibe of original jungle productions, when I first heard them I felt like I'd been transported back in time. Fair enough they are a bit slower and some of them have more of a dubstep influence. But I would personally call it jungle before breaks. Same with some of the LHF stuff too. It's all about the vibe.

basicly grew up listening to 90's hardcore,happy break beats,and happy hardcore back in the 90's but love hearing these sounds again
love hearing that old skool piano vibe and amen breaks and those old skool samples.

i remember Jumpin Jack Frost asking "Who is to say that drum'n'bass can't be a 140 bpm?" in Concentric Beats (2001)

a lot of us felt that way at the time. me and another local, Contents, used to play jungle/dnb at (or around) this tempo all the time, glad to see its making a comeback!

Wasn't jungle all over the place anyway? Most of it was 160 - 165, but it did go down to 140 and up to 180 at times.

Yeah, that is true, and most of the earlier hardcore stuff was about 145 - 155 (typically) anyway.

I just meant for the most part ie. the majority of jungle tunes then were about 160/165 and the majority of dnb tunes now are 170/175

yup, for the most part...

there are always exceptions to the rules... beautiful exceptions!

Smith & Mighty records are a perfect example: they work at < 140, @ 140, @ 160, > 160... and sound just as good regardless of BPM.

There is waaay too much focus on bpm in EDM circles anyway. I get it's a DJ-centric culture and the exact bpm is right in front of our noses when we produce, but people worry so much about bpm and talk about it so much at times, ugh. Must just be pet peeve of mine, though. I hate anything 'concrete' haha.

i'm with you on that, i've always hated these "tempo cults" that seem to calcify. fucking boring as hell. I think your right about lackluster djs being the cause of this... or is it the product, lol....
