For fuck's sake, why is it so hard for people to grasp the concept that brostep isn't a subgenre? Its just a loose word we use to conveniently label a large portion of dubstep. It doesn't have to have clear-cut boundaries or conventions, cos say it around people who know and they'll instantly know what you mean. I say this as someone who loves the odd bit of Chasing Shadows, Bar9 and Emalkay. Its not always used negatively, its not a genre in itself, its just a word that's much easier to say than "midrange-focussed, loud, filthy, generic, mainstream dubstep."

I'm not sure that follows. Hipsterism (bearing in mind, "hipster" is a pejorative) basically revolves around a false sense of elitism, false in that it's tied to obscurity such that obscurity makes something elite. Hence the joke... how many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Oh, I'd tell you, but it's a really obscure number I'm sure you've never heard of.
apparently you do not realize that hipsters do not care what other people think. we just got tired of the same old shit, and moved on the greener pastures - while the people who are not "hipsters" are comfortable with the same shit over and over.
anyone who bases their taste off other people's opinion - they're not a hipster, just someone who's insecure.

Something I've been thinking.....if brostep was legitimized (maybe filth would have worked as a not so obviously stupid genre name), and the "original" dubstep and "frat boy" choons were divided, we wouldn't have had to deal with the waves of datsik/borgore/skrillex bass threads and the "oh dubstep? I like skrillex too" phenomena. That's what's grinding everybody's gears, isn't it? To me it seems like some of you would prefer the division.
Sure some people say "oh its alllllll dubstep" and "I don't like all these sub sub genres", but I think the main reason is that people don't like that Burial and Borgore share the same label when they're too very different styles/scenes to identify yourself with.
It's like: I like metal, but there's just so much difference between Slipknot and Electric Wizard that the subgenres really do make a difference.

I still don't get why people put Datsik in the same breath as Skrillex sometimes... Why is Datsik concidered Brostep to many people? I mean.. Skrillex I can agree with... as well as Nero for instance, seeming that most of their songs are not even close to dubstep, and more orientated towards house and dance styles. But Datsik uses almost no vocals, no cheesy trance-like synts, and are mostly around 140 bpm with a lots of sub at the bottom. Datsik has a pretty damn alternative sound, which is anything BUT mainstream. You don't hear datsik on mainstream radio broadcasts, and sure as hell doesn't have fully proffesional music video's. And I'm not even talking about his collabrations with other DJ's here.
It's not a bad thing to have subgenres. Almost every music style has it. look at how many types of Rock there are. You have Rock 'n Roll, Rock, Hard Rock, Indy Rock, Alternative Rock, Punk Rock, and the list goes on. But the fact is, that Brostep is usually an insulting phrase. Esspecially to people who try their best to create something original, that has rougher basses, and a bit more mid-range sounds to it. I'm just fed up with having to post a new WIP and having to mention: Warning... some people might consider this to be Brostep.. I am so sorry for this. I get associated with people (Bro, fratboy douche's) who I myself don't even like to hang around with.

Hah! Of course you care what other people think! If you didn't, the terminology used to describe different artists would be immaterial to you, and you wouldn't see your (presumed, incorrectly) esoteric tastes as a source of pride.
