That may be true, but what is mixing really? Beatmatching two tracks together, knowing when to nudge a track, how to fix a trainwrecked mix, making your blend sound pleasing to the ear, knowing when to drop or add in frequencies, when to use effects, learning and knowing the structure of the music you're playing. All of these things can be accomplished no matter what medium you're using to mix. The method of learning is different for each medium, but in my opinion, mixing is something that transcends the physical hardware.

im pretty surprised the usb stick option hasnt been mentioned more. two tiny usbs, that usually hold at least a few gigs of music or far more than a wallet of cds, that you can just plug in and use. their also relatively cheap for how much storage you get compared to cds, and it saves lugging a shiny laptop into a dirty club and risking it being stolen/damaged/pissed on. im hoping that eventually the companies that make cdjs will start making decks mainly for usb sticks personally. vinyls a different beast though, i highly doubt it will ever completely die, it sounds awesome, and theres just something about owning vinyl that you dont get with downloading an mp3 for some reason.

RE: controllers/other digital setups

I'm all for them personally but it feels like it's taking a bit of time for quality DJs to pick them up and put them to use. I know the manufacturers invest a lot into promoting their wares via big name DJs but for now at least I've never seen anyone play an amazing set out on one, it all seems to be about overusing the onboard effects without any real consideration to what's going on at the song level or in the mix as a whole. Maybe the direction that Richie Hawtin has been going in as a DJ is an example of where I would like things to go generally... perhaps... i'm not totally sure.

im not knocking vinyl, mine are my pride an joy and i use them whenever i can, i just think that days of vinyl as the most used format for djs have gone, but i think itd be an utter disgrace if the vinyl culture was allowed to go completely.

Personally I've enjoyed the hell out of Serato every since I bought a box last summer. I still get to use the decks, can search for tracks easily, and best of all can record my vinyls to lossless digital and not tear up my vinyls cueing them.

It's like starting fresh, but you still got chops from the other medium,
so he may be relearning to spin , by getting CDJ mixes tight.

Depends on the vibes though I guess, and I couldn't see it working without the MC, but still, was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm not sure on this one, might be chatting breeze, but isn't that the way a lot of DJs/Selectors in Jamaica play anyway?

Most reggae DJ's don't really beatmatch just pull up one track press start on the next!

With regards to the vinyl v digital debate it would be nice to see more DJ's using time coded vinyl so that proper turntables get better treatment in clubs, I don't see it happening though. People who are just starting to DJ aren't going to buy turntables and serato or even CDJs when they can just buy a controller and plug it into their laptop. I think controllers are going to be the biggest medium in the future
