People who have an attitude of complacency never ever master an instrument. It's not the most blatant form of dominance but it translates to the female brain the same way. Achieving mastery is dominant.

Besides, people can choose to make music for whatever reason they want. being better than the next man is pretty much the direct source of 99% of the best hip hop/rap and grime lyricism and delivery, for instance. and bluegrass pickers push one another in annual competitions here in the USA.

Getting as good as possible and mastering your instruments because YOU want to be the best for your own sake... the 'competition' in hip hop/dubstep has possibly led to the shit state its in now.

TBH, I'm pretty familiar with these ideas of "mate value", male competition etc, from semi-scientific PUA/Evolutionary psych blogs, I just really dislike them. That quote "Men built society to impress women" and so on. Maybe people's ability to make art and our liking for it evolved because it shows "mate value", but if you don't get worth from music aside from genetic survival points, that's sad as fuck.

The way I, and perhaps Lye Form too, experience music is the exact opposite of something for competition and domination. Not to get too wanky, but I think making/enjoying/sharing music is the closest thing we have to transcendence. It's such an ego-less thing. This could just be me not realizing the evo-psych mechanics behind it and all, but that's how I experience it. The feeling of music is so different from say scoring with a chick or getting a good grade at school, which can feel completely like ego boosts.

I like to believe that even though we evolved as a byproduct of our genes' survival, this evolution perhaps accidentally gave us higher consciousness, which allows us to have meaning as opposed to just existence and perpetuation.

I don't experience music as some sort of EVOLUTIONARY THING where I want to be dominant over others, I like it because it changes the world around me in something that I experience inside. And when I make music, I try to get my inner exerpience outside. But I recognize that my drive to make music the way I do, even if it's not consciously to be dominant or prove my worth, is probably rooted in that need.

Like when you fuck a girl on a night out you don't wanna get her pregnant, but your choice and attraction to her is largely determined by how good her offspring would be with you.

I think we create 'meaning' with our "higher consciousnes". But that 'higher meaning' isn't real outside of our heads.

Well of course we usually don't feel it as "an evolutionary thing". But while one might derive some vague feeling of "I'm winning" from getting rich, getting a fancy car, fucking a gal etc, at least personally, the feeling of music is very different. The evo-psych line of thinking probably rules out the notion of "external" vs "internal" motivation, because there all positive emotions are just a carrot on a stick being held by your genes, and thus gained externally. But if there is such a thing as "internal" motivation, then music is internally motivated IMO.

I'll be honest though man, I find the ideas of evolutionary psychology extremely depressing but pretty convincing, so I probably have a vested interest in there being some kind of loophole.

People should (imo) just make music because they enjoy it and share it cus its fun to share/play music with others.

I think I'm competing with people for best drums/rest of the tune -ratio. Just in the beginning stages of my track, I have 86 tracks (not including buses) and 51 of those are dedicated solely to drums.. SO FAR. 2 sets of drums plus 2 more fills and one of those sets still needs some more perc. I'm probably adding 3 more by the end of the une.

Also got a few more tracks for gabber kicks too that aren't soloed.

Obv this doesn't make the tune GOOD. But I'm just saying, by the end I'll probably 400 tracks dedicated to drums and about 10 to the rest of the song. And that's why women want to have sex with me

that last bit doesn't hold much water tbh. all different motives from different artists have contributed equally to the good and shit states of popular music. Competition fed the golden era of USA hip hop. Actually i'd say if you wanna talk about the shit state of certain areas of that music, lack of competition has been the driving force. Everyone's happy. West coast, east coast, ignorant, conscious, coke rappers, weed rappers, all of the rappers are happy. And a lot of those are the lyrics that are wack
