What's funny is that what 99% of Americans think is good Mexican is really not that Mexican. Burritos were invented in America in the Southwest to feed the migrants during the depression: they took leftover beans, rice, what have you, rolled it in a tortilla, and that was enough food for one hungry person for a day.

I learned all this when I actually went to Mexico and they were putting carrots and cabbage and shit in my tacos, and the only places that had burritos were there to exploit the dumb gringos looking for them (and which were priced accordingly in an ironic twist on the original purpose.) Real, authentic Mexican food varies widely by region and will often surprise you in how much it differs from what we expect.

That being said, I'm happy that the SF Bay Area has the best AmeroMex (what the rest of you call Mexican) bar none. Any of you fools come to San Francisco, go to Taqueria Cancun on 19th & MIssion and spend $5 and walk out fat and very, very happy. 8)

good resource if you're a taco fiend like me - http://pickyglutton.com/2013/04/30/the- ... on-review/

hands down the thing i miss the most from home is the ability to stumble into any hole in the wall joint and get an horchata and three tacos for 5 bucks.

I'm on the East Coast and we have this family ownd chain called La Tolteca/Tonalteca....
It is absoluty NOT - "Authentic" or Tex-Mex even...

BUT - One of the things that has made them so strong is they have actively integrated with local taste...
Italians and Mexicans here mix well - strong kitchen ethic...

IE my favorite menu item is a Burrito Azteca - which is made with squash - yellow & zucchini + mushroom + chicken + salsa verde

It looks like this but add a layer of green sauce...

And this may sound weird but...

The best Italian food I've ever had - was in Sedona Arizona

and that's almost traiterous for me to say considering all the Italian Americans here...I'm surrounded by them.

this thread reminds me of a silly entry on buzzfeed that listed 20 or so things "you'll miss as an american when in europe" it such tings that are apparently nonexistent in europe such as 24 h restaurants, lack of light sodas and frozen yoghurt (wtf we even got frogurt in my home town and this is a god forsaken rural village). all in all there were lots of weird stuff listed there that were just plain confusing,

i would also like to comment that actaul mexican food has weird animal parts used in it. and i always make my burritos / tacos quacamole etc myself and love it. the whole concept of mexican-esque fastfood is bizarre and repulsing to me
