definitely a satisfying finale. like ronin said it's a character driven show, so its no surprise that that was the focus. but i do think that it wasn't as good as it could have been.

imo the dark, occult elements of the show is what made it really stand it to me in the first place from all the other typical buddy cop shows, so it is sort of a shame that they didn't delve deeper into the mythos of the cult and the yellow king. they wouldve needed another episode or two to do it right though

another thing that sort of bothered me was how they made the connection to errol with the painted house... really? "this house is a different color than it used to be.... the spaghetti monster must have been a painter who somehow got paint all over his ears." a bit silly, i think it sort of shows how pizzolatto is a really, really good writer when it comes to the characters but he still has some room to grow when it comes to other areas.

it's interesting that they dropped so many hints about audrey being abused and then never touched it. ties in to the "sprawl" that cohle was talking about and the whole theme of darkness lurking everywhere except for a few sporadic spots of light

^^ yeah, the above really sums it up for me. It was a great show but could have done with 2 more episodes to delve further into the occult.

Yeah the paint/ears/errol thing really threw me. I tried to ignore it but it was pretty flimsy. I guess it's trying to get across that they really had exhausted every option and were following even the most tenuous of links they could find.

Yeah, that scene was just mental with Wu-Tang clan in the background.

That seems logical, if coincidental, at least. Rust was heavily in to drug circles for years. They were hunting a meth dealer, it makes sense that if Rust knew this gang it was because they had drug ties.

on point as always phigure.. the correlations between the case and audrey's situation ultimately reinforced those themes of the show and revealed a lot about hart's character and home situation at the time.. won't deny i was on-board with a few of those theories but i'm glad it panned out as it did.

the paint on the ears bit threw me a bit as well... considering errol's established as a gardener of sorts it would have been less of a stretch to have him don a pair of green earmuffs or something to help make that connection. one more episode would have complimented that final act nicely, especially considering the first two were three episodes a piece.

who's ready for the fargo tv series?

oh dayum just finished watching this, best program i have seen for ages. Mccongagaga is a great actor loved his character.

Thought the ending was good but from the darkness of the rest of the show i was expecting him to off himself right at the end and go 'see' his daughter or whatever. I think that kind of ending would of been quite cool, would have fit better with rust's philosophy. Felt it was a slight cop out the way it did end but people would have criticised the end whatever happened i suppose.

i think it made a lot more sense to let rust live, he was a total nihilist and it was pretty clear he didnt really have a desire to live (he even says he "let go"), so i think in a lot of ways its a darker ending for him not to be able to die and to have to continue to endure life

That, and the hero -> anti-hero arc has been done so many times that it's actually really nice to actually root for the protagonists to live/win.

While I wouldn't call this plagiarism, it's a little too cute for Pizzolatto to say, ex post facto, "Oh I was influenced." He should have been up front even in the show. Make Cohle a Ligotti fan from the outset, and you're off and running without a problem.

It's more a case of not-great behavior than anything else.
Seems about right.
