FWIW, I was kind of craving some unsubtle tearout darkstep stuff by the end of the last minimal techy night I went to - I love the weird minimal garage vibe, but it can get just as samey as anything else if people stick too close to the same template all night.

Wasn't entirely directed at you, more a general observation.

Although there are lots and lots of threads where people get enthusiastic about minimal garagey stuff, 2562, Hyperdub, whatever, so it's not like people are just sitting round moaning and not saying anything at all constructive.

Not quite sure where this thread has lead to exactly but to the OP:
The music we write, I sometimes get my guitar out and accompany the heavy synths as well, we know its not to everyone's taste but we're not writing it for everyone.
I dont know exactly the tunes you are talking about but I've heard some shitty sampled stuff which I dont like, I prefer playing my own riffs over my own music.

i think the real bummer is when people tend to stick to one specific area of the sound in their production and/or dj sets. vary it up! have fun with it! throw in something that's not dubstep right in the middle of it!

so much whinging and complaining about what's not good, when there is so much that can be done if you just look past all the divisions!

listen to all of it, pull the best from each area, and mash it up however the fuck you want to. the only thing that i don't like is a lack of creativity. everything else is fair fuckin' game in my playbook...

fever wrote:sorry to sound negative, but is it just me who in this scene isnt feeling this overdark/deathmetal clashy sound going on by select producers?? I tried to dig it but cant... especially those dubstep tunes that directly sample deathmetal and make a dubstep tune out of it. that sound in my opinion, is not dubstep.

Im sure some out there are like who am i to tell what is dubstep, but i listen to dubstep becuase its:

1. good "headnodding" music
2. a style of music where u can just "vibe" to it or dance to.
3. its highly influenced by two of my fav. genres: dnb and dub reggae
4. it has a "chopped and screwed" vibe on certain tunes and can be easily accessible by people of colour, urban ethnicities, reggae and dub fans, junglists, and folks open minded enough to listen to experimental music.

how is deathmetal dub?
oh, and by the way... I love death metal but dont like it in dubstep. it drives me crazy!! a dubby track and a hard on death metal grinding track dont mix!!

anyone agree or disagree??

^^ back the original point of this thread.

This is why SCENES don't mean shit.

Fuck what you heard, and just do your own shit. Forget what else is goin on.

Present the music on your own terms, blah blah. Scenes pass.. good music holds up. We've heard it all before, but it is true.

Darkness & light, got to have it all.

primate wrote:i get what you mean. i don't like it either, but i buy skull disco etc instead. it's been discussed. but the dub in dubstep doesn't only refernece dub reggae. it's the dubplate culture and the dub effects - not strictly the skank or off-beat. dubstep is just a bracket for bass/sound system music around a certain tempo.
it's garage, people. and everything else inbetween.

colour? not a music thing anymore. i thought we left that behind in the 70's....

all genre's suffer from fracturing. look at hiphop - madlib = hiphop, 50 cent = hiphop.... both quite different from eachother, i would say.
Yes Bruv,

So what does the Dub in the DUBstep stand for then?

I don't understand why call something with the name DUBstep but have no Dub inside of it?

All interpretations of Dubstep is large standard.

I prefer it with reggae sounds because i love Dub.

Certain tunes shouldn't be called Dubstep they are massive tunes at 140 bpm but to me it isn't Dubstep.
