Our modern age is all about brands - every time you wear that shirt, or those shoes, or eat or drink that product, or even mention the name of a brand you are promoting it. Dubstep music or not, they are trying anything they can to get you to be a vehicle for their product.
You want to get into the ethics of it? What really finances our culture? I dont think anyones making that much money on their record sales, so lets just say this thing is being fueled by the events. Event's are ultimately paid for by alcohol sales. You wouldn't have a venue to hear this music if alcohol wasn't being sold. People wouldn't go to the event if they couldn't have a drink. Or a place to smoke. No one is talking about the ethics of alcohol companies. I think their products do more harm then a music video network channel.
If you have a problem with dubstep being used to push a brand or product, I think you just have an issue with brands or products.
In my opinion, I say lets milk them for what they got. Money in the dubstep artists pocket just fuels the scene, allows our culture to continue.

its a question of finding a comfortable balance really. any time you engage with the corporate world it involves some kind of compromise or tension - its not just the alcohol thing (which is a very good point btw), vinyl is hardly the most environmentally sound way of storing music either!!
endorsing a company is about legitimising and promoting them as a business in a pretty direct way, as well as allowing them to benefit from your image and reputation. there's nothing wrong with questioning this on a case by case basis even if in the end you decide to do it.
all money is not the same wherever it comes from. most of the time it comes with strings attached. sometimes this compromise is worth it sometimes it isnt. there's no reason to assume that its either starve or take every bit of corporate cash that comes your way!
its up to everyone to make
informed choices and not just blindly do things without knowing or caring what the consequences could be, for them and the community of artists and listeners that they are involved with. which is why discussions like this are so important.

i think it's wicked you still come & here to chat to peeps. There's not many music scenes or internet boards where your average punter/clubber/record buyer can chat with well-known artists. Bigup Skreamz.

One more thing before I go back to working on movie trailer music...you want your head to spin? Look at your retirement fund, or your bosses', or your bank of choice, or your co-op apt you live in. Look at all the funds that are invested in, and what a black-hole of cross informing that opens up. Look at where your taxes go even. It's all too much. Look at Time Warner AOL, and where that money goes. It's all too fucking much to take and don't think I haven't had some Mosquito Coast moments where I wanted to pack my fam up and build a cabin in the mountains, hunt, fish, solar, the whole nine. I'm exhausted from the last 8 years of bullshit in the US. I'll take your money FOX News! I deserve it after this administration. In fact, I bet that money is really mine anyway...where's our 2.3 TRILLION in missing tax dollars? It's economic and cultural war out there!

Totally, unless your gonna opt out of society you have to play their game to your own advantage. No'one has the right to tell you how to play that game, it's an individual thing that suits the individual as everyone's personal situation is different.
Surely this thread can be brought to a close now.

ugh, this bothers me.
if its a individual personal situation, surely those who feel inclined should feel free to have this convo without it being "brought to a close" by the "you have to play their game"
fuck that nonsense tbh.. its just that, a game. "they" made the rules, and its a fucking setup, that you WILL lose.
sorry.
if you WANT to play that game, go for it, i aint mad at you... but you are arguing against & reinforcing a position at the same time... im personally saying, fuck red bull and scion... thats all..
and yo, its def fresh that skream is up in this, dont ever stop dude, you are the peoples choice because you are there with them...

the moneyhounds are always gonna try n fuck a cashcow, but aslong as the people core to the scene continue to love hearing new and interesting sounds theres no reason for it to become stagnant. when the new tunes are nostalgic rip offs of previous big hitters thats when the whole thing spirals in on itself and ur left with the battered corpse of dnb.
wheres my money?

You have completly misconstrued me bruv, the game I'm refering to is life in western society. Your living it just the same as I am, you don't have the right to tell me how to play it the same as I don't have the right to tell you how to play it. I'm not talking about Scion etc etc, didn't once mention them in my posts.
I'm not reinforcing anything, re read my posts before jumping down my throat.
To break it down for you, most people (in fact everyone who uses the internet pretty much) use products supplied by corporations,
unless you completly opt out of the system (which you clearly don't, as your sat at a computer using an internet connection) you can't escape using products supplied by corporations. So we have 2 main choices -
1) bury your head in the sand and join the ranks of the sheeple
2) use the system to your own advantage whilst being aware of what the system is, how it works and what the goals are of those who control it.
The reason I asked for it to be brought to a close is because it becomes pretty stupid when post after post people are gunning others for working with corporations when you are using a service supplied by one to make such a statement.
Do you not see the the hypocracy in that?
So again, please read my posts more carefully if you want to gun me, otherwise you make yourself look silly when your completly off base.

did they just ask u if they could use a track? or did you get to write something specific for it?
im a bit behind on all the hot gossip myself
skream wrote:Reptilian wrote:skream wrote:yo reptillian, how long u been envolved in the "scene"?
well i've djing garage/grime/dubstep since like 2003 but only for fun, promoting and djing nights up north where i live and working in a record shop
guess my only involvement in the "scene" is from reading the forum and listening to radio shows and buying records.
look, i know this thread might come across like im digging at you for doing the nike thing but i'm not. its more of a general observation about things seemingly getting more mainstream and commercial. that was just a recent example. im a guitarist and personally i wouldn't do ads but i respect your decision to do the nike thing.
if you want to make nike look good then fair play to you
fair play, i shouldnt even get envolved in this shit....but i cant help it so....
At the end of the day i make music for a living....
Things like the nike project are a big thing for me.....
I make music for "underground" heads...actually i make music end of....
dubstep may not be around forever so i need to think about my future...
I shouldnt even get envolved in all this shit cause i will get mocked...
but fuck it...

The bigger dubstep gets the better.
Just remember where it started and don't put up boundaries. Keep pushing and experimenting and importantly keep your ears open and enjoy the music.

Only people that mock this attitude are idiots.
Respect to yourself because it's your life and your future. You have to do what you think is right for yourself.
The only producers/musicians that are able to break free from this sort of thing are the super rich. People like Trent Reznor who can basically do what the fuck he likes now and he can do it just for the people and just for the music.
Until that point producers/musicians need to survive and if that means making music for MTV/Nike then who is anyone to cuss that. Without producers like Skream Dubstep wouldn't be where it is now, dubstep needs to grow otherwise it will just die.

lol, aint nobody "gunning" for nobody.. just people having a convo about something very relevant. end of thread proclamations are weak, thats all..
the old model of the music industry is DEAD. if you feel comfortable allowing the corporations aka tptb, dictate the new model, do you..
what you said was, end this thread, AND everyone has their own situation.. THATS hypocrisy.. end your participation, allow it to go on.. THATS personal... you were advocating some kind of individualism yet reinforcing some type of "western" group think... and THAT does bother me.. so it goes..
aint nothing silly about this at all, red bull, scion, AND western civilization can all go fuck off imho.. like ive been arguing on here for the last week, theres value in this besides money, and the only people who will EVER look silly are those who forget that...
i could honesty give a fuck if red bull, scion nike, mtv, shit, even bbc read this and watch me say FUCK YOU, all of them.. and i will STILL take the money if the deal is right lol... silly lol
and dont get it twisted in any way shape or form... the corporations can ALL go fuck themselves. the ARTISTS have my full love & support. get that get that, but never fucking forget.
