do you find you have to put up with more or less macho bs posturing from male dj's/audience in the dubstep scene as a female dj when compared to other genres?

Hm. it's hard to say. i don't think so, as compared to other genres. altho i don't have all that much experience playing other genres out; i've just played glitch hop out, djed IDM and breakcore on the radio and djed dnb at home.

i'd say theres a lot of competition with other djs for playing big gigs out here as far as macho posturing goes but theres some doods who i feel appreciate me, especially bc i practice and try to avoid clanging in the club in front of my peers :) that always helps.

actually yes, i would say the dubstep scene has been much more open than some others. that's not to say there's not random sexism around the internets, but for the most part it's been chill. i think that could be attributed to the fact that there have been women in other genres pushing the boundaries for a few years now. i can honestly say overall the vibe for women is a bit better now than it was 13 years ago when i got into it. but it's still always been better than it was when i was playing in bands. i actually was asked the question once "you play guitar? and you're a girl?" *shakes head*

but when i have encountered the stupid shit, it's mostly been undercurrents of sexism rather than overt meanness usually, tho that's not to say i haven't had some pretty nasty shit said to me over the years (usually when i have the nerve to speak out when i see something that crosses the line).

for the most part there will always be assholes, because no matter what the genre, music scenes are still just a microcosm of the world at large. but really, i have met some downright LOVELY people because of music, and i can handle the idiots because for every idiot i have met in music, there are 50 others who are cool as shit.
