if i told you how many frustrated producers i know, just trying to be able to live off their art, and maybe not have to be a slave to the 9 to 5 or the paycheck...we'd be here all day.

i'm waiting for the moment when someone nails the digital watermark properly, and when that day comes, we'll really see the shit hit the fan, because there's 3 generations of kids that are growing up thinking that lifes one happy download folder full of entertainment. paying for nothing, and entitled to everything.

when that bubble bursts, its going to be worth watching the fallout.

i am one of those starving artists. i don't produce. i make live jazz & electronic music. my goal is to support myself on music someday, as is the goal of many of our peers. file sharing CAN be an opportunity to make that happen if you do it properly. I have seen that be the case. ever heard of Dino Felipe? He's on Schematic & Ipicac in miami. he is supported on love by those who appreciate his art. many of his friends are in the same boat & are fucking exploding around the world(ahem...Otto, anyone?)...sharing does not HAVE to be the death of music. It very well could be tho...i'm not going to pretend like i don't see your side. But it doesnt have to be like that. there are so many different possibilities for everything...

Just downloaded 'Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers D' about half an hour ago and after giving it a listen, I'll be buying it because I like it. Hopefully I won't get stung by customs on play.com again... stnuc

I do a weekly show at a college radio station, and everytime I go to do my show... I roll up in the mcr and there's like 5 or 6 kids with laptops and external harddrives ripping the whole fucking CDs of everything in rotation.

I saw one kid looking like a sewer rat emo tard ripping a new folk release. I was like... "thats you kinda music" ?

he had the balls to actually say he was just copying it to get credits on a ftp site. FUCK! the is what the napstar/kazaa/p2p has generated?!?!?

In a scene the size of dubstep the reality IS getting a couple of hundred quid for a tune. I released 2 vinyls that were both hardcore techno. 500pcs each, and that's what you get back. About 400 euro's. And that's vinyl.

Don't forget that getting 800 quid of a track would be selling 2000 records.

That's huge from my perspective... So an artist selling 200 euro's worth of records actually sold close to 500 tracks. Wich is a normal pressing. Imagine 500 dj's spinning your track!

Oh and the clubbing people won't buy by the records. They'll download the mixtapes the dj's make...

Have you checked digital tunes this week? Almost 20 releases in 2 weeks. It's easy doing a netlabel, so the sales show this.

People have to get used to this medium still. I know it's pretty new for me, having spun vinyl for 8 years.


It's not due to pirating, it's got to do with a lot of stuff, pirating being only a tip of the iceberg. Dj's pirating music are propably shit anyway... And if you get into this scene expecting money and bling you're not going te be pleased with the outcome anyway.

There is however some huge rigs and kickass dancefloors for you to reach. That's why I'm in it anyway...

It is easy uploading tunes to digi-tunes or whatever, I know from experience. The trick is actually SELLING music. I know 15 out of 20 of those labels probably don't sell anything. I have gotten on to the top 10 of the entire site for selling 6 tracks in a week! This game sorts itself out. What is the point of going through all of that to completely fail with each release? There isn't one. Most labels last a release or 3 before the hang it up. It is however no small feat getting on Beatport but soon enough a lot of these digital distro's will have the same restrictions because they can't keep wasting bandwidth on literally 100's of deadbeat labels. Not even sure what this has to do with the thread but I am fucking bored lol

BUT, I Haven't illegally downloaded any music for around 2 years - never mind uploaded. I don't buy MP3s but I do buy vinyl and for mp3s i just listen to mixes! I was only young (14ish) when I used to upload and download but these days I have realized that if you likes something enough you should buy it, and if it's not available it's probably for a reason.
