Ah, of course! How could I forget? I was working in clip mode and that's not possible (as far as I know) in clip mode. Totally forgot I could just put it in arrangement and split split split. Thanks gaiiiiiz!

Just a little question to see if anyone else has the same problem. The ableton 'auto filter' seems to not be in sync with abletons tempo (on the synced settings, of course). When I use ableton's built in auto filter (say on a distorted bass) and I then try to add a nice sub underneath and modulate the volume with operators LFO they will not be in sync and this gets VERY irritating. I can change the autofilter 'offset' so as to get them more in time but it doesn't seem like a sensible to constantly do this. I am only using Live 8.0.3 though (don't ask!). I hope someone has some information on this. Even if it's just that I need an upgrade!
Thanks for your time, Ed

I can't exactly answer your question but my friend was having a similar problem with effects and such being delayed. He ended up figuring out that the plugin buffer size offsets automation when increased. What you hear is a split second off the grid when you assume all automation edits are in real time but rather offset by buffer size. Smaller buffer size might help this problem. Or then again it might not but something worth looking in to.

Does anyone know how to disable the screen following which clip is playing? If I launch a clip further down, the screen jumps to it, and I need to do some mouseclicking around the original area.

go to preferences, and go to the 'record, warp, launch' area, then theres an option for 'select on launch'. turn this function off, and then then your problem should be solved

I just bought Ableton, I also have Fl Studio. Anyways, is there any complete guides to learning Ableton? I've become so used to Fl Studio, but I always hear good things about Ableton.

Oh and also does Ableton completely rely on MIDI controllers? Or could I do well without one.

No no, perfectly capable without. You can use your normal keyboard as a MIDI keyboard within Ableton too, makes life easier for those without. Don't always have to draw in notes. Drawing in automation will obviously be a must tho.

Try watching tutorials on YouTube. I watched a DVD with tutorials before completely taking up Ableton Live. Can't remember which one, but I'm sure YouTube has some proper videos. Also, the Ableton team has also started making video lessons, check their YouTube channel and good luck!

or using mouse record it in as you manipulate the parameter, although i have a trackball which makes that process much smoother than a normal mouse.

Yes that's what I meant by drawing in, should have made it more clear.
Thanks for explaining that a little better!

not having a midi controller won't stop you from realising any ideas you have.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to bound midi + effects within ableton, to a wav within ableton?

yeah either freeze and flatten a track or create new audio track and set the input to "resampling", solo the track with the midi and fx and record it off into the new audio track.
