most certainly new.
wrong, this was from the end of an episode in (i believe) season 3 where his doctor tells walt the cancer is all but gone. walt excuses himself to go the bathroom and gets pissed cuz he's not dying and punches the shit out of it.

symbolism, yo

i'm pretty sure him looking back at the punched dryer was hinting that the cancer is back
was i the only one at the end expecting someone to get shot up by the pool or something instead of hank finding the book?

definitely not, since the flash forward shows walt looking cancer free. the cancer has no place in the story line anymore

the flash forward had him looking haggard as fuck and taking a pill in the bathroom

from an interview with Gilligan

What about Walt's cancer? Another fun fact (well, "fun" as it's defined within the dark world of "Breaking Bad"): Walt was shown taking a pill in a diner bathroom in the Season 5 premiere, but that scene was shot two ways (an alternate take did not show him taking the pill). Ultimately the pill scene was used, but we still don't know if it was aspirin or something much stronger.

Cancer "jumpstarted him into this world and into this story we are telling, [and] we certainly don't intend to drop the cancer as an element of our show," Gilligan said. "Having said that, how we bring it back up or keep it alive, so to speak, in story terms… have no assumptions."

From a user called 'Brooklynrocks' on the AV Club comments section of a review of the last ep...

"Here's what I think no one is getting. Gale didn't give the book to Walt. That's my guess anyway. We never actually saw Gale giving him the book. That's the impression they wanted to leave, but I think it was an intentionally misleading impression.
Gale and Walt talked about Leaves of Grass, and then we see Walt reading it. But we don't see Gale giving it to Walt. I think Walt had it already. If you noticed, it looked like a pretty old book; not something Gale would have bought recently and given to Walt (and he certainly wouldn't give Walt his only copy).
Who gave it to him, then? Gretchen. I had to google it, but Gretchen's maiden name was Black. Therefore also G.B.
And the inscription makes sense. And when Walt chuckles when he reads it, he's not chuckling while thinking of Gale; it's a rueful chuckle when he thinks about how he used to work with Gretchen at Gray Matter.
This also explains why Walt wouldn't destroy this book as he did the other evidence of his crimes; Gretchen gave it to him, he knows that, and doesn't think twice about it.
And so the big irony; Hank figures out who Walt is via a clue that shouldn't even have been a clue to begin with."

Gretchens maiden name was black? and she married a guy called Schwarz. Isnt that bilingual incest or somethang?

And I cant see Walt even keeping a book given to him by his lost love and colleague (something he's obviously bitter about) on the toilet, let alone ruefully chuckling at it.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think that's a bullshit theory. We never knew Gretchen's maiden name as far as I'm aware.

I think Walt just kept Gale's book because of his pride and ego. He also assumed Hank would never see it because he thinks Hank is a stupid meathead who would never read a book of poetry, but as we know Hank is smarter than he seems.

Word, that's what I thought too. But it's still a decent theory.

The 'Black' thing isn't mentioned ANYWHERE though.

Yeah, I Googled it and found nothing. I've been watching the show since it's inception. Ah well, would have been a good theory if it was true.

Word.

So did Walt stop cooking or not? It's toats something he'd lie about, I just can't see him pulling off cooking a couple of times per week without alarming Skylar at all?
