Essentially, it's the first time in ages that expectations have been realistic. England have not been anywhere near being a top side for more than 20 years.

That's not saying England can't win the Euros (they won't, but it wouldn't be the biggest shock of all time), but they have nowhere near the level of quality as say, Spain or Germany.

Germany will win it I reckon. Scary thing is, based on their squad and the players on the fringes, they won't peak for another few years yet. Could see them dominating over the next 2-3 tournaments.

^ that's what I'm thinking, they have a strong squad that is also very young.. Gotze and Podolski will only get better

looks like Shinji Kagawa will go to ManU for about 17,5 m euro. It´s a shame he leaves Dortmund, but it is his dream to be the first japanese player in the pl that breaks through. You will have a lot of fun with him next season

Yeh happy we tied up the Kagawa deal. Funny how the press are going on about how it was a plan B for United. I think that transfer was always on the cards with Sir Alex making an appearance at the German cup final to have a final scout. £12M with the fee going up to £17 based on success and appearances is not a bad bit of business at all.

With Chelsea making impact in the market with Hazard, Marin and Hulk? and City yet to spend their zillions I hope this is just the start for United. I won't be expecting anything £40m+ like the other two but it would be nice to bring in some players that show we still have the intent of claiming back our title and also that we can still compete financially. Really is a shame that football has actually come to a point where money (very much inflated money) is looking to be the best way to gain success.

I say all that and we didn't really spend a significant amount last season and came 2nd in the league by goal difference. That without our best defender/captain for most of the season and a particularly hard fixture list in comparison to other title challengers. Im sure we will be there or there abouts next season.

I fucking hate modern football.

I know it's different because Manchester United generate mroe revenue than anyone else but they have a lot of big transfers. Nani and Anderson at 18m apiece Veron 24m Berbatov 30m Ferdinand a whopping 27m.

Ferdinand has proved himself to be great value the others less so but Manchester United fans (Like Liverpool fans) crying about the money spent by other teams is laughable. Apart from anything else them stealing Robhinio from under your noses was a great bit of business for you. Same with Chelsea paying you about 10m for Mikel.

Whilst it's not a good look if he leaves a few days after appearing on the season ticket renewal video saying the words "Be committed", I can't say I'm surprised.

Birmingham are now in a completely fucked position if he goes. What manager would come to a club that's under a transfer embargo, has no money anyway, whose owner is in court and has just been ordered to leave his house (and can't leave Hong Kong anyway) and might not have a job if they (hopefully) sell the club soon. I honestly can't see us getting a new manager until they sell, and I can't see us being bought until we go into administration (and thus will be a lot cheaper than we are now). That coupled with having only 15 contracted players (of which I've no doubt that Hughton was the main force of attraction for more than a handful) makes for pretty grim times as a Birmingham fan.

Also wonder if the Norwich fans that complained about Villa "poaching" Lambert will be as up in arms about their club "poaching" Hughton.

Probably not but then football often makes hypocrites of us.

I really didn't realise just how bad Birminghams position was and I can only hope it sorts itself out. I'm ok with the tribalism of football but I don't want to see other clubs fucked this way.

Supposedly it isn't as bad as the media make out (when the accounts are published, they're going to show losses, but not as drastic as some are reporting (mostly from last year)) and this year the club has pretty much been running self-sufficiently (which isn't going to get us much success, but at least it's good) and we have a deal with HSBC to stop money made by Birmingham City PLC going outside of the PLC, but it isn't going to get any better under the current owners. Just hope the rumours of an imminent buyout are true, Yeung needs to face up to the fact that the Golds and Sullivan ripped him off and he's going to get nowhere near £80m for us now.

It would be hoped that club owners took longer term approaches. They are usually in it for a profit which is understandable but the model of spending and relying on Premiership survival or CL qualification was discredited when Ridsdales Leeds experiment collapsed to a point that they are yet to recover from. Liverpool were also in the position where we relied on RBS to protect us from our previous owners that were hemorrhaging 1m in interest payments a week and had us days from administration. Portsmouth's trials are also well known.

Players and managers have a responsibility to deliver but owners and chairmen have to plan for what happens in the event that they fail. There needs to be some kind of regulation that understands the importance of football clubs to communities. My preference is for some type of fan ownership or involvement and for owners to have to demonstrate their commitment and their ability.
