The Grandmaster
On a Martial Arts related note, I watched The Grandmaster last night. Loved it, it has such style and grace. I got the Chinese Cut as well because apparently the American version is 'dumbed down' with lots of explanatory text and is shortened too. It's one of the many films based on Ip Man and apparently it's the most historically accurate. I still haven't checked out the others, but I can't see how they could top this if they take so many liberties with the story to make it more action packed. Will be back on here soon enough after I have watched Ip Man and the sequel.

Unforgiven

Do they still make good westerns? Seems like year since anything decent. 3:10 To Yuma, Assassination of Jesse James, The Good The Bad & The Weird were all standout.

Not if you use the John Ford standard, but here are some:

Meek's Cutoff (Quite slow, still good though)
The 3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada (lesser known Tommy Lee Jones movie)
The Homesman (Tommy Lee Jones directing, and I know you like William Fichtner)
Blackthorn (Butch Cassidy story)
Appaloosa (Ed Harris & Viggo)

Yeah, grabbing Meek's Cutoff and Appaloosa now. "Three Buriels" didn't sound like my sort of thing, so will add it to the list later. Also Homesman hasn't been released anywhere yet...is there a DVD copy floating about or something?

Dark City - 1998

Surprisingly good, for a late-90s mystery/sci-fi/noir/dystopia thing. Surprised it doesn't get brought up more in reference to The Matrix, similar vibes/story.

Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen, 2013)

Well good, best film I've seen with a female lead in ages (Cate Blanchett).
Trailer doesn't do it any justice.
Rich socialite wife loses husband, funds and social stature, proper nervous breakdown stuff, pretty harrowing in parts. Woody can write a film alright.

Pretty amazing film by Nicolas Winding Refn with Kim Bodnia (Pusher 1) and Mads Mikkelsen.
Highly recommend this if you've also seen the Pusher trilogy.

Just rewatched Mulholland Drive by David Lynch… slightly less disorienting the second time around which oddly enough made it all the more amazing

It's a funny thing with Mulholland drive. People always use it as an example of a film where things aren't supposed to be explained fully but it's actually all in there. It takes a rewatch but there's clue's all over. Like with the shining.

Ill definitely be watching it again sometime soon. I pieced together my own interpretation of what was going on, but theres still some pieces missing. Inland Empire by Lynch however is a completely different story. If you've seen it id be interested to hear what you think about the rabbit sitcom haha. The Shining, as well as a lot of Kubricks later work makes a lot more sense if you look into the evidence supporting that he directed the moon landing… but thats a whole new thread entirely.

Yeah Inland Empire is tough. I liked it despite it being a longer version of the black hole sun video lol..

I watched that room something something yeah and it's definitley cool. But Not just the moon stuff, more the level of detail. That is sort of going on on a minor scale in mulholland drive.

Inland Empire is great. There's actually a shitload you can figure out if you can be bothered to spend the time on it.

think it's just one of those things where ive seen too many bits by random. I haven't seen the original planet of the apes, citizen kane or deerhunter either ... but I'm definitely going to watch 2001.. :dunce: :6:

Watch all of them! They're all favourites of mine and it's a bit cliche but 2001 is GOAT for me

Talking of correcting one's that should have been seen before I watched Grave of the Fireflies yesterday. Harrowing stuff, went into it thinking it'd be on the vibe of Miyazaki so it took me completely by surprise. A truly great war film that should be seen by everyone, anime fan or not.
