No, their equivalent would be a nice little hut with some cattle and nice family.

It doesn't mean that they're content with less. It's jut not the image they have. All these modern conveniences don't make us happier. They make us evolutionarily more successful.

If people there are less depressed than they are here it's because natural selection weeds depressed people there out more than over here. We've aquired more wealth, more wealth means less scarcity of resources and therefore we can share more. Including with people who are immobilized by depression. Same with how people with diabetes still get to procreate in the west due to medication and it doesn't get weeded out of the gene pools as quickly as it does in let's say, rural Africa.

happiness is a word we use because it's less ugly than saying we feel superior to others in that moment in a given context. anyone anywhere can feel that.

not sure why you assume all africans are primitive children with no conception of first world wealth because they don't live in a city and why you think they don't have lawyers, cars and suburbs in those cities.

Uhhhh I'm not saying that. I'm saying they're growing up in a world where 'success' takes on a different meaning and therefore, comparing our idea of success to theirs is unreasonable.

Sure, they can imagine life in the west. Just like we can imagine life in the world 3000 in flying cities on Mars. But growing up in Soweto means you'll have a different idea of it and different expecations because Soweto is all you've experienced. Much like Western Europe in 2011 is all I know.

If I were to be dropped there from one day to another, yeah shit would suck. Much like being dropped here to the year 1035 would suck shit. It's not the environment I was raised for.

I don`t agree with this.

They do know the difference between poor and wealthy, the difference between hungry and fed, the difference between no home and myself driving past them in my nice car on the way to my house.
At some point they will be depressed just because they have nothing, maybe not depressed but certainly unhappy.
Which is generally why they turn to drugs and alcohol.
I don`t think they would choose to live in a shanty town if you gave them a choice.
It`s one thing if you live in a jungle and have never experienced western life.
But if you live in squaller, you certainly know there are better places to be.

Middle Class or Upper class can certainly not look at a similar class and get depressed by that just because they live somewhere else.

Soweto was an AWFUL example and I was very hesitant to post it. It's part of an environment that is by all means Western so obviously they experience these things. But there's places in Africa with a different understanding of how life should be compared to us. If someone says goat and a muthut in Africa, I'm picturing a more rural environment and less western one. And people who live in that sort of environment and merely recall western standards second hand do not live our lives with our expectations. They don't, I'm sorry.

And take note of the bolded part. Depression isn't sadness and unhappiness. It's a physically abnormal brain.
