I wouldn't say melody is really the foundation of a dubstep tune. To me, the things that make the difference between a good tune and a great tune are more like
rhythm
dynamics (build and release)
bass
vibe
etc.
rasta samples
massively reverbed snares
etc.
etc.
melody

To be honest, I suspect that Skream could make a better track than (say) me even if we both started with exactly the same set of loops and only used those loops. There's a lot more skill to writing a tune than just coming up with a nice sounding melody.

@slothrop: yeah of course.. i was only talking about 2d and that obviously has a very strong dominating melody (and a pretty good one). yeah, skream is a skilled producer and knows how to make wicked tunes, no doubt about that.

rasta samples make a good tune for you?

i'm all about people staying away from the reggae vibe. although i do appreciate a good dubby track.

What's wrong with "too easy"? The best ideas are generally the simplest. If you listened to the Beloved's "The Sun Rising" way back when, the main hook of the song was a preset for the Emu samplers of the time and that's like an entire melody. I bet there's a hell of a lot of other presets used straight out the box over the years on other tunes that all but producers would be unaware of. They are designed to be used after all.

Why the fuck does anyone care? if you like the tune, good, if not, fair enough. who gives a fucking shite what goes into making it? Surely it's all about how it makes you feel not how complex the producing is..

Might buy a million copies just to make it the biggest dubstep tune ever and tnuc everyone off.

Big tune by the way!
