I liked the funky i heard at FWD Vs Rinse, nice and lively on the dancefloor. Should be called UK House though, a much better and more accurate term i think.

agreed. funky as a name is actually the main thing that stopped me checking for these tunes for ages. the vocals still kill it (in a bad way) for me a lot of the time - i like the hooks and sassiness of garage vocals, not the full-on cheese some funky tunes have got going on. that pulse x remix is bad tho, and anyone who doesn't like township funk is dumb/a snob/both. so there.

Totally agree about the vocals, am partial to garage vocals all day but a lot of this is more RnB/Pop. Township Funk isn't funky and its shite, proper shite. I still can't believe it got a Warp release..

nah township funk is kwaito but i've heard it dropped out in funky sets and it fits with the general soca/bashment/african house kind of influences that funky at it's best (imo) brings to the fore. tf is the kind of tune that will polarise opinion i think, tho i'd hope dislike of it is based on the tune itself rather than sniffiness about the production values.

I suppose the production values have got something to do with it. I love Grime and Basslines sometimes questionable quality, out of tune vocals, playstation beats etc, but Township Funk just sounds like the embarrassing first tune you make on fruity. In terms of both its music content and its production values.

i spent a little more time trying to hear more of this stuff. just heard all of mac 10's new rinse set. there's some sick bits right in the middle of that set.

it has to be said that much of what i've heard so far from these sets sounds a lot like nyc house from the late 80's. obviously the bpm's in funky are a bit faster but the arrangement and structure (using one main loop and then alternating it (dropping it in and out)) is getting really close to it.
here's some examples of what i'm talking about. these tunes are nearly 20 years old now.

soho "hot music" from 1990.

bobby konders "nervous house" 1990

this whole sound was really pushed in new york by two labels, nu groove and kool groove. both worth checking out as there's some real classics.

i'm interested to hear more of kode's stuff and donaeo too.

funky is for gaylords that like women in the dance

it gets air pie, air pastie and boiled air with soldiers

I doan mind it as background
Not a lot holds up as core listening
but it overcomes my perennial dislike of latin rythms
because of decent bass and good vibes.
Ta for Nasty DL chasps.
