Get your downloads on at Addictech - dedicated to freaky bass music like no other!

Establishing himself as a truely original beatsmith with his releases for Werk Discs, Lo Dubs, Ruff, and his own Starksound imprint, Philadelphia based producer Starkey drops his first album for Planet Mu and its turning heads and bumping speakers here at Addictech!

Starkey represents the US in a sphere of UK dominance within the Grime and Dubstep circles, with his electro bleep bounce, thick bass and twerky rhythms he stands out as a true original sound in a sea of cookie cutter tracks surrounding him.

We could go on trying to liken his sound to other artists, but honestly Starkey drops an original sound that you should hear to appreciate.

Peace

just wanted to make a correction. this has come up in a few blurbs lately.... I do not run starksound (even though it sounds like i might). it is run by warlock & noyeahno as a Rag&Bone offshoot.

cool.

Starkey, as you are here... first listened to Bang Bang The Witch Is Dead on a radio show downloaded from your website, about two years ago, I guess. It sure took a long time for that to come out....

I was wondering, what's the (creation) time span on the album tracks? I am sure most are from 2007/8 (or 2011), but any other "oldies"?

"Bang Bang..." was originally released on the Angel EP (vinyl only) which came out this summer on Creative Space. But since it was never released digitally or on cd, Mike wanted to include it on the album. It is probably the 2nd oldest track on the album. It took a while for the "Angel EP" to come out because of problems with the master plate.... which had to be re-made. So the delay really pushed that record back.

Regarding "oldies"... "Marsh" is probably the oldest track on the album. It's like 2 years old I think... but I did go back and revise it for the album. I had sent that track to Mu back when I was just sending demos out to labels I liked, and Mike had kept it (which is pretty cool). He asked me "whatever happened with that track 'Marsh'..?" and i was like, "hmmm. nothing... wow... I haven't listened to that track in a year probably."

But most of the music on the album is very new. "Pressure", "Time Traveler", "Spacewalk", "Striking Distance", "Pictures" and "Dark Alley" are all pretty recent. "Miracles" was like December/January 2007->2008, and I believe "Last Chance" was around that time as well. "Gutter Music" is from March of this year I think.

I used to date all my bounces... but I stopped doing that about 2 years ago. Now everything just ends up in a folder with the year.

Thanks for asking.

Thanks for taking the time. I did get the Angel EP, by the way: Bang Bang is in the mix in my signature...

i really dont know what to say everytime i write about starkey...he just blew my mind from the first time i listen to his work...i read at least 4/5 interviews with you over the internet but you never talked (or they never asked you) about what softwares/hardware do you have in your studio and if you use a lot of samples (i believe yes, cause you were influenced so deeply by hip-hop), could you tell us?...just really curious about it...

I asked his about his studio ;)

http://www.3barfire.com/index.php/Featu ... Space.html

'JB: What’s you studio like now compared to the set up you started on?

S: When I started producing music as Aunt Jessica (which subsequently became a group of mine)... I was using a Gateway PC w/ Acid Pro 1, Fruity Loops 1 and the Hammerhead drum machine. I had a Sound Blaster soundcard which was fed by a Behringer mixer and my Korg N1 keyboard. I was mixing on the speakers that came with my computer.

Now I have a couple of Mac laptops.... and still use the Korg N1 (but mostly as a MIDI controller for the fully weighted, 88 key keyboard). I mostly use a Motu 896 interface w/ Logic 8, Reason 4, Ableton Live 7, Kontakt 2, Melodyne plug-in and a few other plug-ins here and there. I'm all about re-wiring. I'm not a hardware junkie at all... but I do have a Juno60 and the Moog Satellite Synth along with a 1/2" 8tk machine.'

I love the new album, quality stuff. Big up Stark Bot!

yeah... i'm more about synths for my melodic content right now... then samples for my beats. Lots of one-hit stuff, but there are a few breaks here and there on the album.

nice production tho :P

just not really into the high synths myself right now :6: marsh is ill tho, and i love the trancy vibe on spacewalk, the sounds come together nicely.

I haven't listened to the album yet (NORMAN RECORDS PRE-ORDER, DO YOU HEAAARRRR ME? :( ), but I am all for criticism like this. Usually it's much easier to believe it than the "this is the dopest album I've listened to since the big bang". There was a thread where people criticized a Mary Ann Hobbs dj set and then the answers were in the tune of "every little thing she ever said and every tune she ever played is flawless and can't be criticised". Oh please, if you made 3000 sick tunes/dj sets/radio shows, if the last one sucks, it sucks, and does not deny what you have done before.

Having said that, it will be the dopest album I've ever heard since the big bang.
