Porter Robinson: "'True' dubstep is thoroughly uninteresting"
While many ITMers would have been pretty pleased that UK bass innovator Burial today released a new EP, there’s one man who may not be celebrating: Porter Robinson. In an interview with inthemix this morning, the 19 year-old Skrillex-signee confessed that he’s not too fond of the classic conception of ‘dubstep’.
“Personally, I prefer brostep to what they call ‘true dubstep’. In my opinion, true dubstep is thoroughly uninteresting, c-grade production,” Robinson told us. “I mean, of course there are exceptions – Skream and Benga are extremely talented – but I think there’s an enormous amount of pretence in the dubstep community. Because something is deliberate and uninteresting, it makes it superior to the more accessible stuff. I don’t buy that at all.”
While he’s clearly not too fond of early dubstep, the US producer also took issue with the term ‘brostep’. “I think brostep, like a lot of genre terms, started as a derogative label,” he explained, “but people have reclaimed ownership of the word brostep, like they’ve reclaimed ownership of the word ‘queer’. Personally, I think brostep is full-on inaccurate; I don’t think that the bro caricature type, the bro stereotype, is limited to dubstep in the way that popular culture would portray it.”
But Porter’s not denying he’s dabbled in the wubbs before. “I have a couple dubstep songs that are heavy and aggressive, and I don’t mean to knock the genre at all, but I think it became a little worn out. I mean, it’s been done so thoroughly, I think every aspect of hard dubstep has been explored.”
Hey Mr. Robinson:
I actually don't want to care about this guy's opinion, but he has a punchable face. Look at that and tell me you don't want to punch it. You do want to punch it, don't cha?

In my opinion, true dubstep is thoroughly uninteresting, c-grade production.
I'm not sure who this guy has been listening to but I consider the deeper aspect of dubstep to be of the highest standard of sound quality...

I also like this part
I think every aspect of hard dubstep has been explored.
and this whole article's theme is how he doesn't give 2 shits about Burial's new EP and on that EP is stuff I've never heard done before

so apparently this is better (and more original) than the entire non-brostep part of 'dubstep'

The irony here is that this is coming from a fucking House producer (which is what he's known for... )
Oh, and he toured with Tiesto and Tommy Lee so he must know something, eh?
Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one and most all of 'em stink.

There's so many highly questionable statements in that quote...
C-grade production? Then mention Skream and Benga as examples to the contrary? Not to knock Skream and Benga, but their productions have always struck me as less technically advanced than, say, Distance or Kryptic Minds. Seems like he mentioned them cos they're the only names he knows... The man obviously hasn't heard much dubstep when he's lumping it all together like that.
And how he just calls it uninteresting and deliberate, as if its just a fact that everyone accepts. Uninteresting and deliberate are two words that describe his tunes pretty well, I think

The first time I witnessed a moshpit at a dubstep rave was a proper moment for me.

I don't know what's more offensive - writing off an entire scene you know nothing about (save for Skrilly's bros Skream and Benga) or likening the reclaiming of 'brostep' to the reclaiming of 'queer,' which was an actual political movement that made policy changes and changed society at large. What a complete turd.

I'd like to know what "old dubstep" tunes that he's heard which he's judging the entire genre upon...
