I never thought much about the subject, but now that it's been brought to my attention I see no reason to agree that music is self expression tbh.
Maybe that's just 'cause of the way I, and people I know, go about making it.

Sort of a mute point by itself..
Are you saying that all musicians through out history has been social cameleons that are basicly peacocking, nevalo ?

I can't see how you can create music without it being an expression of some kind. Even if you're fucking about not caring what it sounds like, you're expressing that you don't care what it sounds like at that time.

I get where you're coming from but even there it doesn't go much further than being an expression of taste, which needn't be a personal one.
For me it becomes more evident when I use vocals, I don't realistically identify with the words I'm sampling into lyrics, I guess I just look for the right flow. I mean ideally I aim to remove myself from it as much as possible.
Like I get that your taste influences your output, but I wouldn't think that any of my tracks sounded particularly relevant to me.

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise is one of the most spectacularly boring records I've ever heard.

Thank fuck other people are agreeing. I remember when it came out everyone went on about it like it was a work of genius. Suddenly popped into my head for some reason earlier and realised no-one has mentioned him in ages. Wondering if the hype has worn off and people realise it's shit now.

Don't think I've brought myself to listen to a whole Jaar track. That thing he did with making some bullshit box to play his mundane melodies out of made me cringe a bit too.
