Reading a pretty brilliant semi-autobiographical account of Dostoyevsky's 4 years in a siberian work camp. Some great tales and insight into human kind here.
Reading this after Primo Levy's two autobiographical books from his time in and traveling back from auschwitz. Really interested in this kind of writing.

Finally got round to re-reading 1984 which I read but didn't pay proper attention to as a teenager.

It's fucking awesome.

Just finished:

Image

Senationalist and a bit dodgy sourcewise (a bit "One child we spoke to said exactly what we needed them to say to prove our point") but worth the read... some pretty alarming stuff in there.

and agreed! 1984: best book of all time. the number of references to that book in other media at the moment - room 101, big brother etc etc is mental.

anyone reading the new Dan Brown - Lost Symbol ?

Might pick this up soon. The genre is not my regular cup of tea, but I've read all his others. Angels and Demons being the best imho.

Lee Smolin - "The Trouble with Physics"

Image

declared best book of 2007 by The Economist and Seed. it basically presents the physics discovered so far (relativity, quantum physics, string theory) but it's not very technical.. more like a story.

Bought it for my Dad for Christmas and read most of it on the sly before wrapping it. Really good!

Read that a while back, and really enjoyed it. Can't remember a damn thing about it now though!

Well, I can remember Calibu-yau manifolds, but I can't tell you what one is...

I can also recommend "The Tiger That Isn't" on the non-fiction stuff. Very interesting

After The Colbert Report the other night, I want to read:

Not only does he look and sound massively like McLovin, it looks like a fun/interesting read.

Almost certainly my favourite booky thing ever. I can never work out if I prefer the radio shows or the books, but they're both amazing.

Just started reading this a few nights ago:

Picked it up a while ago, wish I hadn't left it this long to read it. It been a good read so far and is probably one of the better books I've read on subject. If I remember correctly, she was one of the original proponents of M-theory. Seems to be a pretty good communicator, pity she doesn't seem to be generally as well known as the other physics bods.

Also, I find her vaguely hawt!

just read "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatim - apparently a source of inspiration for 1984 ... was good read but a bit all over the place....
"the Road" by Cormac Mccarthy is great, rayte atmospheric and bleak - jus my cuppa tea.
