I didn't lock that thread, and i think you can't ban people straight away because its not fair, there has to be a process. That said, if some posters carry on as they are, it won't take long for them to leave on their own or get banned

I locked it until I could figure out who it was, obviously Jesslem. He's been banned again, and the thread unlocked.

i love vinyl as much as the next guy, but the sound quality difference is 99% of the time placebo.
Well this isn't true.

prove me wrong? the only quantifiable difference in quality comes from the master, the rest is all placebo

well the tune gets made on a computer and it's put on a record from a digital file, so the only change in the sound is going to be the mastering job and perceived warmness from surface noise, or am i missing something

whaaat?

The freq spectrum is entirely different so everything else is definitely not placebo, eventhough there's a point that I like in there.

An mp3 is cut off in the highs at a point where we can stil hear even if we're not a dog. I think human hearing goes up to 20 and it's cut at 16 or something.

A vinyl is basicly alive

They defo sound better man. If you listen very carefully when playing a record, you'll hear a very faint noise of somebody explaining over and over again why vinyl is better.

AFAIK, that doesn't happen with digital.

i mean my perspective is probably stupid, but i enjoy buying records, love going to shops browsing and finding stuff i didn't expect and there's more of a process to putting them on and i like that

but i have shit needles on shit decks and a lot of crackly as fuck tunes so the sound's never really been a big element for me

Sorry mate I can't cite you any numbers. I remember when dubstep was mainly a vinyl and acetate based genre, and first hearing digital releases it didn't sound right at all. Vinyl has a physicality and presence, especially in the lowend/midrange that digital just doesn't.
Basically, A/B the same tune on a decent set of speakers with a vinyl and a wav and let us know what you think.
And to be clear, I've never been a vinyl purist either, I have nothing against CDJs but to say the sound of vinyl is a placebo is frankly ridiculous

hubb wrote:A vinyl is basicly alive
This. the sound is being generated mechanically in real time, it anchors the sound in a physical space, like an instrument. It's the same with acetate (which doesn't get a lot of mastering at all.)

That said, when vinyl sounds bad it sounds BAAAAAAD. You're always going to get a bad press every now and again. And a lot of people don't look after their records, but that's another story.

I moved country a year ago, didn't bring my records with me. After playing purely digital for the last year, I've come to miss be able to flick through my bag and organizing a set as I go along. Playing USB/Serato always feels quite random for me - flicking through actual records just makes things seem to flow easier. It's hard to explain, if anyone's used both formats a lot you'll know what I mean. And the whole experience is generally less sterile and more enjoyable.
