It seems like every two months it gets a religious re-visit, as if I need to reacquaint myself.
It's on okay album. Venetian Snares lacks so much...substance.
Is that the "classical" one? I thought it was really weak... insanely jocked by fans because of the choice of instrumentation, not the actual composition. It was hardly fucking Bach, was it?

Chocolate Wheelchair Album FTW. Snares should remember what he does best... silly, clever dance music.
He produces way too much garbage. The people who call him a "genius" need to stop sucking his glass dick and actually listen to one of his whole albums all the way through. They're not very good. Same with Squarepusher, I'm afraid.
Richard D James, Captain Beefheart and John Coltrane are geniuses. Venetian Snares is just loads more accomplished than most of his peers.

To qualify as a genius I think his reputation would have to be based on a bit more than just breakcore, jungley breakcore, gabba-breakcore, breakcore with classical samples and not turning up for gigs because he's a wanker. Breakcore is quite a limited genre and Snares has basically taken it as far as it's going to go..

I still think he's really good though.

Oh, and Squarepusher's a bit boring now but when I saw him play live in 1996 my jaw hit the fucking floor. Boy can play!

I must've caught one of his "bad shows", then, because when I saw him after Alec Empire (who was also fucking shite, much to my dismay) his set was basically "WAHH WAHH WEIRD SOUND *cut music* BREAK KICK, SPASM, BLAH BLAH BLAH WEIRD SOUND *cut music* BLEH BLEH BLEH - Repeat -"...Fucking crap.

I don't mind a bit of mashup, fuck-tastic music to make you spasticate out (Richard Devine, Otto Von Shirach, Dylan & Robyn Chaos - All fucking good), but when I heard Snares, I left before the end coz' I was well bored.

Is there a bootleg of that anywhere? Sounds awesome!

Were you at the first Bangface Weekender? That was his most frustrating one for me. He'd spend about 5 minutes building up an obscenely complicated break, you'd *just* work out how the fuck to dance to it without falling over and then he'd fucking change it with a smug smile.

Memories of that set break my brain slightly, because I looked up at one point to see a photo on the big screens of my ex holding a sign saying "BANG ME HARDER".

That really spins you out at a rave.

The worst set I've seen him do was at Bashout when he basically played a whole hour of gabba. Yawn. Luckily, µ-Ziq played that night as well and was fucking phenomenal as usual.

I can't remember if you were there or not, Si.

The best set I've seen him do was at ATP 2003 when he had an opera singer doing jungle call and response MC'ing. W

Well, either he was brilliant or a combination of Lemsip, red wine and magic mushrooms was doing something very innovative to my brain.

Yeah, I was, u-Ziq was awesome... all I remember about Snares is that it was the middle of the summer and he made the decision between staying in a hot, sweaty room and sitting in a cool, smokey garden distinctly easier than it would've otherwise been.

anyone that thinks szillag is just okay needs their hearing tested

that billie holiday remix is fucking unbelievable...

he is a bit of an arsehole it must be said but his music stands above the vast majority of mentalist producers...

the only albums i've failed to get are his last two...

I loved venetian at the first bangface weekender, but then again i wasnt really trying to dance. I don't really have a bad thing to say about venetian snares

I would maybe go for Higgins ultra low track glue funk hits as an introductory album, or chocolate wheelchair. I dont even know what i like about snares, it just gives me goosebumps everytime.

As for truly great albums i would say

Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's
Beach boys - Pet sounds

And for me
telefon tel aviv - fahrenheit fair enough

Don't want to take this thread in the wrong direction, but all this talk about snares...

I was lucky enough to catch him early on, people sometimes forget what a big difference 10 years makes in music time, the game changes so drastically, as does technology. In 1998 snares was doing shit on an ancient amiga that was absolutely mind bending, building on hardcore, jungle and the kind of shit aphex and squarepusher were on, but making it SO FUCKING DARK, mean, complex and tripped out. He upped the bar and anyone who knows anything about that kind of music at that time knows it's true.
