As for any money made, some could go on some server space which could be made available to upcoming producers, promoters etc. to build their webpages and put tunes/mixes up for download. This could all be done via a central hub url - dubstep.com or whatever. Some sort of online community thing. I feel loathed to call it a portal, but...
Although if you reckon this could be done for free, or with sponsorship etc, money could be used elsewhere!

Hey guys, I've just had an idea which I think is really good. I'd be really keen to get your feedback.
Here goes...
With regards to getting proper, professional quality CD's produced and printed, have you considered the possibility of getting some form of sponsorship/collaboration from a company?
ie. We get
someone else to pay for the cost of production!
I've seen stuff like this happen all of the time - all we have to do is come up with a sound and professional proposal. Something along the lines of this:
In exchange for paying for the costs for the manufacture of the CD's, the sponsor company gets to have their logo on the back of the packaging. They get the associated credibility of being connected to a fresh, new musical movement.
Obviously, the sponsor would be a company that is youth-based - ie. a street clothing brand or something similar. I remember seeing a few companies that would include a similar type of CD with their T-shirts (Ecko and Nique have done this, along with others) If you look on the back of any Paradox Music albums, he's obviously got some sort of arrangement with companies like Firetrap and Acupuncture. The logos aren't even that big! My point is, that there are young companies that would beleive in and be very interested in such a project.
As an added bonus, If the company
was to include the CD with clothing sold, it could mean a great deal of exposure for this forum, and indeed for dubstep worldwide. It could really give the scene a boost! We could strike a deal where the company gets a portion of the CD's for their own promotional usage. (and therefore they are in essence doing our distribution for us, too!)
If we have the tracks and artwork all ready to go, and make a prepared, professional proposal then this could be quite easy to do. And guys, I speak from experience - I've put on small events that were paid for entirely by sponsorship by clothing companies. Actually, I've also been involved in the launch of a 12" that was entirely paid for by a streetware company.
Anyway, that is the basic core of the idea - obviously there would be a lot of details to be considered if we were to do this - but I thought I'd suggest it, just to get everyones opinions.
I know some people are going to be weary of any "corporate" involvement in this project, too. Some people would prefer that we did it all by ourself. But I think that the idea has a lot of merit and is entirely possible.
By whatever means - let make this happen!!!
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on my idea...

That's a good idea....
We could also try to get record shops like Rhythm Division, etc., and radio stations like Rinse to help out.
I look at the back of my Risky Roadz 2 DVD and I see the logos for Rinse FM, RWD Magazine, HiGrade distribution, Rhythm Divison, Urban Tingz.com and Static Media.

By the way, I'm really keen to do some designs for the album cover. Do we have a name for the compilation yet?
Calling it just "Dubstep" could be just a little odd. Maybe we should vote for a name?
(although, calling it Plasticman might not be a good idea

)

Yeah Brett, I think product sponsorship within music is more common that people realise.
I'm pretty sure that Teebee is sponsored by DC shoes. Have a look on the back of "Legacy" - there is a small logo there. And a whole swag of pop-punk bands sponsored by various skate and surf companies.
Of course, we would be looking for a company that it as fresh, and as cutting edge as the music that will be on this compilation.

Personally, I don't like the sponsorship idea very much- only my opinion though. It seems ideologically opposed to the purposes of a community-produced project.
I'm hoping that all the people that submit tracks/artwork are acknowledged in some way. It's very easy to overlook the most committed members of an online community.
Even though this is the bleeding edge of fashion, without names that would "sell", no sponsor would touch this stuff with a barge pole. Making this project commercial, I am sure, will make the process more selective, some already established producers would see it as another opportunity for self promotion when actually it's only fair that everybody gets a shot.
Democracy is a messy business. And let's face it, this compilation isn't going to be anything like "dubstep allstars vol 3"!!!
Added to that, digital distributiuon costs next to nothing, and it's totally appropriate for a collective that exists online only.

Yeah cool - I just thought I'd put forward the idea as an option, since people were discussiing the expensive possibility of producing actual CDs.
I do agree that it "seems ideologically opposed to the purposes of a community-produced project".
And yes, digital distribution is quite appropriate for an online collective.
It depends on what the goal of producing the compilation is;
Is it just to share some tracks amongst ourselves? Or could we potentially expose more people to a sound they have never heard before?
For this reason, I still think there is some merit in the sponsorship idea - perhaps someone will suggest a modification to my idea that negates the ideological quandry that you have highlighted.

Right we need to get this rolling.
Does anyone have an ftp that people can upload tunes, or clips of tunes (better) to? Then the panel can listen to all of them and decide on the tracklisting.
