Haha, no my mum was listening to jungle and garage when i was young.. shes fully into her electronic music. But she loves her dubstep, on the other hand my nan thinks its complete shite.. she describes it as repeated vomit sounds

Im 19 and I've been listening to dubstep for about 2 years now. I got into dubstep through listening to metal.... I know everyone is going to hate me for saying this but my favourite style of dubstep is cookie monsta, stenchman, bar9, culprate, excision and datsik, trolley snatcha etc. I started listening to rusko, caspa, benga etc (I know not a huge transition) but I just like the energy these tracks have. I do like artists like mala and coki but I hate the fact that knowone really speaks about any other kind of dubstep on this forum. By the way i hate Mt Eden and Jakwob

Im 19 started listening to this music around 3/4 years ago. I grew in the Toronto area and my cousin was djing at the time. Mostly jungle/garage, something you dont find too much in the area.

At the record shop he worked at they got the first Skreamizm in and a few DMZ. Bought them and have been hooked ever since.
I'm more into the deep, rootsy sound but I do enjoy bangers from Skream, Benga, Distance, and artists in that area of the scene.

I think the problem around here is that most of the scene kids, who used to be into metal and bashed electronic music are getting into dirty wobble stuff, such as Datsik, Flux, etc, and claim to love dubstep, blah blah. And because of this have no appreciation for anything that isn't "dirty" and turn their noses up at anything else.

I do respect all producers if they come with something new, but I hate the fact that dubstep is now a trend.

I think labels such as DMZ, Swamp 81, DEEP MEDi, HyperDub and so on and so forth are making sure the current trend will not ruin the music.

I see that people are talking about "educated dubstep" again. Intelligent dnb, anyone?

I'm 21. First listened to dubstep at the ripe age of 17/18 when my mastes had told me it was this"new style" with "loads of bass".

From Loefah to 'Allstars 5 to New Garage to Chilled,I feel like I had the opportunity to experience that nice 05-08 sound that dubstep had at the time and of course the wide spectrum available now.

Looking at young ones it makes me think that my "generation" of dubstep was Loefah, Skream, D1, theirs is Doctor P, Funtcase, Borgore....Each to their own.

I think there's a definite feel that Trolley Snatcha et al are very very young.. and I think their sound signifies this, because they grew up on "wobble" etc.. so definitely a lot of "Brosteppas" are very young.. but that's their crowd.. and I still play out Zack's tunes btw..

"Youth" in any scene is necessary to ensure it survives, in one form or another. If you've already produced chainsaw wobble for five years, I don't think you'd produce it for another five.. unless you had some kind of Gandhi-like stubbornness. I think a few years back, the DnB scene grew stale because it was just all the old heads making the tunes, and there was no new energy until recently, with all these up n coming producers like Lenzman, etc.. who have now (thanks to the internet) been able to break into a very closely guarded community.

Dubstep thankfully has not been, and probably never will be stale, everyone has their own take on it, and that's why I love it. I converted from DnB about two years back for the reasons mentioned above. And because of Geiom's "Cardoza".

On the flipside, you can be young and still reek of intelligence, just look at 21yo James Blake. He makes tunes like a man twice his age. Seriously the rate at which the younger generation (yes I actually said that) can adopt and adapt to new technology is staggering... But yeah, DSF often surprises me at how young some of the posters are, and unfortunately Get Darker TV is often populated by silly lickle bwoys saying that deep tunes are "boring" and asking for Datsik/Trolley etc.

Anyways, Numan is one of my favourite producers hands-down.. and I wouldn't put him in the same category as those mentioned above, despite his age. So I guess it's what's inside the skull, not what's on the birth certificate that dictates what you create.

16, been listening for about a year and a half (not long, i know). the thing that annoys me is the ignorance coming from both sides of the spectrum. on one hand you have the 'purists', who make sneery comments like "anyone who came in after the in for the kill remix is a poser twat", and on the other hand you have the poser twats, who know nothing about the history, and are purely obsessed by who can come up with the best "i just fingered my nan" comment. i had a moment a few weeks ago where a boy came into registration in the morning, and proudly exclaimed "i've found this sick producer, he's called dubstep! wubwubwub". i wanted to cry. IMO it's ridiculous to set a point (ie. sweet shop/in for the kill) at which you become a poser if you discover dubstep after this point. i personally think the more who discover talented artists (brackles, mala, dark sky, rustie, flying lotus) the merrrier.

19. Born and raised in south Florida, USA. I have been into dubstep for a year or so but I have been a drum&bass head and a fan of pretty much all stuff electronic for longer than I can recall. I feel like a wolf coming in with sheep, so to speak. Its like I just got wind of a huge deviation of what I have worshipped half my life: the breakbeat. I see the people that don't know their shit coming in and making a bad name for all the newcomers and such. They make us all look like a bunch of Borgore zombies.

thats why you need to spend the next few years honing your skills and finding your sound, so when you do play out, you knock peoples socks off!
wish i was 16 again. seems like ages ago. the years roll on quicker and quicker the older you get imo!

True mate! But i think i've found me style and my sound, or at least i hope so, i have my first real dubstep gig in next month So i am working on getting the last tunes and vinyls ready. But over the next couple of years my style will off course develop and i will make better mixes, but i think i am pretty good for my age and experience level. If you have time, please check my mix

being "proper" or "keeping it real" is almost (in my eyes) irrelevant, because every "underground" facet of anything will come to light in some mainstream capacity eventually. many people in general are ignorant&uneducated. they will label electronic music as dubstep, joker as "wonky hip hop" --whatever. you can't help it when people see someone like zomby along the sides of lady gaga. this happens all the time with most everything. as i tend to agree with most of you on the "proper" vs. "bro", they each have there place and if anything will help (overall) progress the genre& sound. i think its up to YOU to educate dudes on what the fuck is up. stand up for this shit.

Im 17, been listening to dubstep for about 3 years.

well i'm 16 but don't worry i'm not a bandwagon jumper! been into dubstep long enough to know a fair deal about it. just wish i could of heard about it earlier and maybe be a bit older so i could of got some of the early dmz on vinyl. currently looking to start a collection because i'm really interested in old skool hardcore and jungle as well as garage like todd edwards and tuff jam. always been into music because of my older brothers and they sort of helped me find my interest in underground music, but i think lots of young people are getting on teh wobblez because they haven't had any guidance from anyone on what to listen to apart from radio 1, brmb etc
